What heat wave?: Two Aussie's travel the world.

England is renowned for serving up weather that is less than ideal, unless you love the cold, the rain and grey gloomy days that is. OK, so it's maybe not all *that* bad, but it's far from perfect most of the time and even summer can be quite rainy. Fortunately that hasn't been the case so far on our vacation here and, to the contrary, the United Kingdom is experiencing some of its hottest weather ever recorded.

Coming from Australia we are used to hot weather, in summer temperatures can soar into the mid-40's and more and so the 26-30 degree temperatures being recorded around the UK at the moment don't worry us too much however the locals are whinging and complaining about it; That's a little bit funny to us considering it's not actually that hot at all. On our travels we have spoken to many people who are simply not coping with the heat and the radio and television news feeds are loaded with messages of how to keep cool in this *heatwave*. You know: Keep hydrated, turn on the air conditioning and one even suggested wetting a t-shirt and putting it in the freezer for 30 minutes prior to putting it on. Kind of funny when one remembers they are talking about temperatures in the mid-high 20's...What bloody heat wave?

For a country like England, not used to temperatures like this, it's not really a joke though as many people do not have air conditioning in their homes and have no real way to cool down. Older people and young children are the worst affected although most people are feeling the heat. There's a couple fires burning out of control, water rationing (garden watering) and general chaos being created by the heat.

We love it though as it makes our photo's come out better with lovely sunny days and blue skies. The image was taken at a place called Clovelly which is a small village in the County of Devon with amazing views over the Bristol Channel. The day was about 24 degrees, cooler than it is today at 28, although a splendid day to explore the little town.

We do have air-conditioning, its called opening a window ;)

It's true that people complain though. I went to get my hair cut yesterday and the barber's shop is staffed by Italians.  The conversation of course was 're the weather, it being so extraordinary for the UK.  The guy observed that as soon as the weather got warm, many of his clients were complaining about it, being Sicilian he didn't really understand why.

But you see Britain is the historic home of sport, and complaining about the weather is one that we have reserved not to let the foreigners beat us at; unlike all the others!

What a lovely place to be on a day like this. Good point about the air con. There's a wild fire not too far from here in the north of England and the air has been very poor with smoke for a few  days now. This must have seriously affected quite a few people. This kind of weather is rare here so us Brits just aren't used to it. Fortunately for me I love it (without the smoke).

Heatwave. I think we have to be consistently in the low to mid-30s before we start calling it a heatwave here, though they might call it a drought before we reach those temperatures. All that because we typically have a solid amount of rain for seven to eight months out of the year.

We're currently around 25 right now with a breeze. It's warm, but pleasant. I'm sure I'll not be happy when it gets warmer, but it'll be better that than when it gets colder come late September.

Just need to figure out a way to be happy with the weather we have while we have it, because otherwise something else comes along that we dislike more. :)

Well, I thought I would work with Celsius since you were, but yes, we're the oddballs when it comes to the metric system and measuring temperatures. Somehow, I don't mind it one bit. :)

At any rate, we've been in the upper 70s for the most part for the last little bit, but we've been in the 80s and are actually back in them today and tomorrow.

My wife has the darker complexion. I used to tan, but then I stopped staying out in the sun, plus aged, so now I just burn. That's even with some 50 to 75 sunscreen on, though it will take a while longer. :)
