One way for a band to get noticed is to do a cover of an existing hit song! You see this on YouTube all the time.  People are starting their music career and have written little if any original material so they cover very popular songs that people recognize.  Well this has been going on since way before YouTube!

The Drifters were a popular band from the late 50s.  They had hits like Under The Boardwalk, Save The Last Dance For Me, Up On The Roof, and many more.  They also sang <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdvaIp7sV5Q">Sweets For My Sweet</a> in 1961 and it went up to number 16 on the Billboard charts.  It's a cool pop tunes with a great beat and smooth vocals, with lyrics written by the great song writing team of the 50s and 60s,   Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman.

In 1966, a Garage Band from New Mexico, possibly in Albuquerque, called Lindy Blaskey and The Lavells did a very cool cover of Sweets For My Sweet.  They updated the music to a more hip mid sixties vibe.  There is a fuzz guitar repeating the main riff, with an organ pumping out the chords.  The lyrics are almost the same but the style is a bit different, as expected.  The tempo is a bit faster and the drums are pounding pretty frantically.  The song ends with a short but blazing ear piercing guitar solo.
