ProPublica Chairman shows up on AKAMAI venn

Paul Sagan, the chairman of the board of ProPublica, has shown up on a GekeVenn showing the overlap of government with another corporation Sagan is affiliated with: Akamai, where Sagan is a former CEO, COO, and President. Sagan was appointed by President Barack Obama to the National Security Telecom Advisory Committee in 2010.

Akamai is a technology and cloud delivery firm based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The news yesterday was that Akamai would be partnering with Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Japan's largest bank, to produce a blockchain-based payment network. Akamai has stated its blockchain test verified capacity for a million transactions per second.

Its current CEO and co-founder, Tom Leighton, also has close ties to government. According to his bio on the Akamai website, “[H]e was one of 18 CEOs invited to the White House in 2017 for the launch of the American Technology Council to develop solutions to modernize and secure the U.S. government’s IT systems. From 2003 to 2005, he served on the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee and chaired its Subcommittee on Cybersecurity.” As a result of Leighton's involvement on the Council, the State Department, government-to-consumer agencies, and the United States military are clients of Akamai.

Of special note is board member Melanie Haratunian. According to her Akamai bio, Haratunian developed the privacy regulations of the 1996 Telecommunications Act, due to her position at the time in the FCC. One troubling line in her bio reads, “[Haratunian] provided legal and regulatory counsel on matters impacting privacy legislation introduced in the U.S. Congress, ***and those affecting her firm's Fortune 100 corporate clients***.” (emphasis added)

Akamai is definitely old and big enough to have quite a bit of  activity within DC.

Given the Telcom in this country has almost always been a government monopoly, this want that surprising. 

Now in starting to wonder if there are any publicly traded companies that wouldn't have a union in their GekeVenn?
