Mixed Berry Ice Cream

There is a bit of common knowledge that floats around our humble abode: @generikat loves chocolate.  Really, you could give me a chocolate dipped cowboy boot and I would nibble on it contentedly. Okay, I probably wouldn't, but I would totally think about doing so. That said, I love all kinds of chocolate things, from cookies, to cakes, to ice cream, to yogurt, etc...

My husband, however, is more fond of the fruit and nut side of the dessert spectrum, and since I kind of like him, a little bit, most of the time, I thought I would try to make him an ice cream that would bring some semblance of emanated manly joy.

A couple of weeks ago I had some leftover strawberries and blueberries that I needed to preserve, so I made what I like to call a jam-pote.  I chucked the strawberries, blueberries, and some sugar in a pot and simmered it at a low boil until it gelled up nicely. The fruitful concoction has been whittled away over the last couple of weeks by my toast and PB&J loving offspring, but my thoughts were perhaps it would be cool to plunk some of that delightful fruit spread into a batch of ice cream and see what happens. I mean, why not?

So, I got out my trusty Cuisinart ice cream maker that I truly adore and I whipped up a standard batch of vanilla ice cream. Vanilla ice cream is pretty basic in composition, it just being cream, milk, sugar, and vanilla, so I knew I had a good chance of creating ice cream brilliance. Or disaster. Most likely a bit of both.

All said and done, I added about 8 ounces of my jam-pote to the churning ice cream. It was enough to give the vanilla a hint of a blush color and created more than a fair amount of deep maroon swirls of fructose-tinged decadence.

You like my 1.5 quart bowl? I think it's more than a respectable serving size for one person! I even threw some blueberries on the top for garnish, cause stylizing is a thing.

Once the churning was done, I took a bite of the resulting soft serve, and I have to say, it was pretty delightful. The vanilla flavor shines through, the creamy notes are front and center, and riding on the tails of the dairy train are little bits of fruit and delectable acidity from the jam-pote. Seriously, if you ever churn some vanilla ice cream and have some homemade jam lying around, chuck some of that stuff into the ice cream churn in the last five minutes. You won't be sorry!

We bought one of those for our Anniversary last year and Love it.  Our first fruit experience was Strawberry preserves.... so delicious.  My favorite is coconut.  I love all things coconut and if you add chocoloate, oh my :)    Those look so good!

Ahh, coconut and chocolate, yum! I made some coconut milk base ice cream and adored it, and I bet your strawberry preserves ice cream was spectacular!

You know, I don't have one favorite flavor of anything either, in fact, I tend to like all the things as long as they taste good and are well made. 

Coffee eh? That might be a fun path to trod down, at least I would be alert, lol! Chops Coffee blend! It will be full dairy in composition, so much dairy that cows would salute it as a bowl went by!

I'll take any of the fruit -- berries, cherries, peaches, pears. Frozen Bartlett pears , sun-ripened to a red blush. Not cooked, just frozen. That, in an ice cream, would be the best! Or a good apple butter. Or Concord grapes. Blueberries. Strawberries. Damson plums, gosh, yes! It's not ice cream, but it's handy. You are getting great use out of your ice cream machine -- and it's a long way from summer. Don't burn that motor up too soon!  ; )

Ah, a fellow pear lover! You know, there is a small, artisan ice cream joint up the road in Sandpoint that has a pear and blue cheese ice cream that tastes AMAZING! I can tell you are like my husband and fully in the fruit adoration section of ice cream land. Pears are so sweet that I bet I could make a dandy ice cream with no added sugar:o) Challenge accepted, thanks HH!!

The little ice cream churn that could shall be well broke in by the time summer rolls around, for sure! Now, off to your blog!

That pear and blue cheese ice cream sounds so good! One of the best pizzas I ever had was a pear and gorgonzola cheese pizza, with a pesto sauce. I've had some great lavender ice cream, too. Maybe lavender and pear would be a worthwhile experiment for someone with an ice cream maker and lots of lavender plants. Set up a little ice cream truck of that outside the library and watch out! :D

It is amazing how simple that machine is to use and clean! If you do get one, order an extra freezer bowl, cause then you can always have one in the freezer ready to go! I can totally envision you churning out ice cream:o) Ice cream cone in one hand, metal detector in the other, BOOM!

Ice cream was a daily treat for my husband and I and even my first daughter (don't tell her-she doesn't remember!) until we discovered our 2nd daughters allergies-that and we started really looking at the toll excess sugar takes on the body.  So, don't get me wrong, I don't use the artificiaI sweeteners, I just try to cut the sugar in most recipes by half and I try to use dates, honey, maple syrup or fruit as much as possible.  That all being said, I love salted caramel, but **REAL** caramel, not the fake stuff.  I also had a browned butter ice cream that was just amazing...

LOL! You know, you probably can't tell it from the sheer volume of goody posts that I have posted in the last couple weeks, but I have a ton of diet restrictions, thank you Hashimoto's thyroid disease. After spending many, many years being miserable and searching for answers, I cut out starch and sugar, and started eating in a radical new way. After a couple of years it completely reset my body's chemistry and I can even eat bread or sugar once in awhile, but honestly, I don't even like it that much anymore!

So, I really feel for your little Wildstyle, I spent my entire youth being sick and miserable. My parents tried to find answers, but there just wasn't the data and information sharing that we have now, which makes me so happy for your girl! It's apparent that you are going hard and doing what you can to make her life better and that is so, so amazing:o)!

Also, real caramel is the greatest...mmmm! 

And you killed me with the drool comment, I am not going to admit it, well, maybe I am, yes! I have totally salivated as I read someone's food posts before. Scones post, I am looking at you, he he!

That fruit ice cream was soo yummy, lots of happy grunts were emanated throughout the house by husband and children alike as they dug into it, lol! Which of course is better than the bickering that usually goes on, who knew that ice cream had such magical powers!!!LOL!
