The layers undergo a long and sometimes dynamic ontogenesis. The latter lasts throughout the lifecycle, not only during childhood and early maturity, as is often thought. When talking about the personality it is good to say which are the hurdles of cognitive development of the personality. Against the background of maturation of brain structures, it can be assumed that biological maturation is a driving force of cognitive development. It is also important to trace how the external factors lead to the development of some or other cognitive structures.

In the family environment for cognitive development there is also a significant place in the form of a certain motivation of the personality and especially the formation of motivation for achievement. This motivation is manifested in intellectual insistence, the adequacy of responses to successes and failures, low anxiety, high level of claims, a tendency to choose tasks with increased difficulty, and so on. .

 Of course, all the factors that determine the cognitive development of the personality are not exhausted. Only a few were mentioned, which may have the greatest role in this process. The principle of unity between psyche and activity has an important methodological significance in psychology. The psychic of man is formed in the process of activity - this is the undoubted conclusion of modern psychology. The relationship activity - mental development is bilateral. On the one hand, the psyche is formed in the activity / game, learning, labor, household activity, on the other hand the formed psyche manages and regulates the actual and forthcoming activity of the person. In psychological research, this also has bilateral significance. The analysis of the activity is carried out in parallel with the analysis of the reflection that this activity finds in the psyche in the form of cognitive, emotional - sensual and volitional psychic processes.  Approaches to psychological research are a particular specification of the methodology. The most popular approach to psychological research in the 20th century is the activity.
