minibus travel in Thailand

Don't get me wrong, I also dislike minivan travel, but if you want to get around in Thailand I'm afraid it is just part of the deal if you don't want to rent a car.

If you look online you will see lots of people complaining about it and I would say that some of them have good reasons for feeling that way, but mostly it is because they are unfamiliar with the process.

The thing is, minivan travel is just a part of life over here in Thailand as well as all the countries that I have traveled to in the area.  Would we all like to have our own private vehicle?  Sure!  This is available to you if you want that sort of thing but it is gonna cost you about 20x the price of a minivan and i don't know why but that is just the way it is.    

For example:  Today I went from Krabi to Phuket.   This is a journey that would take about 3 hours if you had your own car.  If you wanted to take a private taxi for the same journey it would cost around 3000B.   My journey?  140B.   (this is Thai Baht every time i type "B" by the way.)

What i am trying to say is that it isn't that bad for short journeys.  In USA, I am slightly above average height and weight at 6 feet and about 190 lbs.  In Thailand I am friggin huge, yet I was comfortable even in the back row of the minivan that I was on today.

If i can do it at my size, there is a good chance you can do it at yours.   If you can't, the private taxi is always available but if you consider that I was at my destination at 2.5 hours for 140 Baht that would have easily taken me the same amount of time had i driven my own car at a gasoline cost of at least 500 Baht..... i think the answer is clear

I think minibuses are more popular in Ghana than they're in Thailand.. 😀 Over here, we refer to it as "Trotro". Almost 75% of the population (including me) in Ghana prefer to travel to their various destinations by these minibuses. 
We mostly travel by these minibuses not because of the comfort( 'cus sometimes it gets pretty tight in there) rather due to its affordability. They're relatively cheaper compared to Taxi and Uber. However, minibuses are the slowest compared taxis and private cars. But I think sometimes saving money matters than saving time. Especially, in an economically tight country.

I have never been in Thailand, but I have used these minivans in El Salvador which I did not mind at all and they are about $70-$80/for 2hr drive but it is pretty much just you and the driver in it.
Our boys used these minivans for a ride to school which comes and picks around 20 kids from their homes and takes them to school and from school he drops them home.  The kids would be all squeezed and that would cost us $30/month.

minibuss travel is cool, not saying is my first option though but if you have to travel long distance then i suggest minibus, ud save alot, taxi may charge almost double the price, in Ghana minibuses does all our travels😄

Yup evwn i dislike travelling in these Hiace minivans. It gets so frustratinv and suffocating in there. But its part of life. Sometimes youve to do things you dislike becoz there are no other options. Perhaps if there are so you arent aware of them. Enjoy your travels @gooddream. Enjoy life. Thats the way u can go.

Well you shouldn't  be much annoyed with the mini vans of Thailand.  It's quite peaceful there. But here in our country. It is like awfully crowded. The minivans too are in.terrible condition. I also hate traveling in these TOYOTA Hiace minibuses. Perhaps I have to coz no other thing to choose.  Thailand. Is it a great place to travel ? Would love to see other pictures from the country?.
