##   Jobriath   - *Morning Star Ship*


## Jobriath is an artist that I did not
discover until last year, and one that I think most people do not know, though they absolutely should.  Bruce Wayne Campbell, aka Jobriath, was an American rock singer and songwriter in the '70s.  He was considered a child prodigy, playing the organ for many major churches in his youth, before he went on to writing and recording his own songs.  He is generally considered to be the first openly gay artist to be signed by a major label, which is why I find it odd that he isn't acknowledged in the history of rock in a bigger way.  Though he only released 3 albums, his songs did receive a fair bit of radio/mainstream attention, but he gave up on writing music suddenly, at the height of his career.  In 1983, he passed away from AIDS at the age of 36.

## This song is from Jobriath's
self-titled debut release, and is *another* song I discovered via a cover (by Morrissey on his newest album).  The album (and song) definitely have a bit of a Bowie vibe, though his vocals are definitely quite different.  He was an incredibly talented keyboard player, yet clearly also a great songwriter, as he was able to avoid the cliches of 'shredding' and instead focus on just playing what each tune needed.  The song is catchy, which is why I'm surprised it hasn't become more of a standard in classic rock/glam rock playlists/on the radio.
