## Minutemen are another group that I'd

The group was formed in 1980 in San Pedro, CA by D. Boon (guitar, vocals), Mike Watt (bass, vocals) and George Hurley (drums), who stayed together through the entire life of the group. Though they were around the hardcore punk scene of the '80s, and toured and played with groups in it, they had a much more genre-bending sound, incorporating ideas from folk, funk, and jazz, along with spoken word poetry, to create something that is instantly recognizable as their sound. Unfortunately, the band broke up prematurely, after a car crash caused the death of D. Boon. Watt and Hurley had very little interest in music after this, and nearly quit all together. However, a fan of the band, Ed Crawford, encouraged them to continue, and with him, the 3 formed fIREHOSE.

## I first heard the group through their first album, 1981's

The lyrics were incredibly interesting, often highly political, and D.Boon's mix of singing and a sort of speaking (rhythmic, though not rap) was very unique, and immediately caught my attention. I then delved into their discography, and realized that I was absolutely hooked on these guys. If you have ever seen the show Jackass, then you've actually heard the band before, as they used the Minutemen song 'Corona' for the theme song of the show. For today's track, I decided to go with 'King of the Hill', which was released on what became the band's final EP, Project Mersh, in the early part of 1985. D. Boon passed away at the end of that year, 3 days before Christmas, but left an incredible legacy of music and lyrics, that have continued to inspire new generations of young people.
