## The Replacements are a group

I was really into punk and hardcore at the time, and was confused why this band always seemed to come up in conversations about the genre, yet sounded SO not like the stuff I was into. Fortunately, I revisited them years later and became a massive fan, and have remained so since. The group was first formed in 1979 in Minneapolis, MN by Paul Westerberg (vocals/guitar), Bob Stinson (guitar), Bob's brother Tommy Stinson (bass), and Chris Mars (drums), who were the core line-up for most of the band's existence. The group began as a punk band, but even from the beginning, enjoyed to incorporate elements from rockabilly, country/western, and folk, sometimes just to piss off their audiences. As the group and its members grew (musically and in age), their music began to change, becoming less 'punk' and more just 'rock', but still remaining original and carving out a new lane in rock and roll. They embraced the grimey, DIY attitude of punk, but didn't allow any genre cliches to hold them back, and were willing to use whatever they felt made the best possible songs. This tune is from the band's 1985 album Tim, their major label debut. The album wasn't the breakout hit the label had hoped for, but over the years has garnered a well deserved place amongst the classic albums of the mid '80s 'alternative' scene. The Verse's are built around a sort country/bluesy progression, which is catchy, but the Choruses of this song is my personal favorite, which is very not-bluesy.
