#
The Wipers - When It's Over

## I realized today while scrolling through

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/grapthar/Lp9Bs2hV-4050b2ee-1ef4-4cd6-86c9-ea8ae6aaedc1-2060x1236.jpeg
The Wipers, playing live

some playlists that I have never before shared a tune from these guys here on Hive before, so this is definitely overdue! I first heard The Wipers probably a decade or so ago, and instantly became hooked. While they had some super solid pop songs, with incredible choruses, some of their music was really cutting edge, and had a lot of elements of post-punk, which I was really delving into at the time. The band was formed in 1977 in Portland, OR by Greg Sage (guitar), Dave Koupal (bass), and Sam Henry (drums), though they had other members over the years. Their early stuff was very much like other punk rock of the time, though very quickly, the band was incorporating new, interesting ideas into their music. They're often cited as the first punk band of the Pacific Northwest, and continued to innovate over the next 12 years, before their eventual break up in 1989.

## I was thinking of sharing a song from the band's 1980

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/grapthar/wmIXnoVC-R-5509621-1395221995-1919.jpeg.jpg
The Wipers, Youth of America (1981, Park Avenue Records)

debut album, Is This Real?, which has some SUPER catchy, singalong choruses, and a really cool timbre generally, which really stands apart from their punk contemporaries. However, I decided that this would be a more interesting choice, particularly if you've never heard the band before. This song was released on the band's second album, 1981's Youth of America, and sort of stands in opposition to a lot of the punk cliches: it's over 6 minutes long, is made up of multiple parts, and utilizes some really complex harmonic ideas. When I first heard this track, I was absolutely blown away at the epic nature of it. While it is obviously long, it doesn't feel repetitive or particularly drawn out, a testament to the band's songwriting abilities. The guitar tones on this album are really heavy, considering it was released in 1981, and reminds me more of songs from the '90s than anything happening at the time.
