The scientific name for "OKRA" is "Abelmoschus exculentus" or "Hibiscus esculentus" Travelers first found it growing along the White Nile and Nile country, as well as Ethiopia. It was founded by a Spanish Moor who visited Egypt in 1216. Is known in the Deep south. Okra is also known as "lady fingers" and "Gumbo". It belongs to the same plant family as hibiscus and cotton. In terms it refers to edible seed pods.

Okra can be used in salads, soups, stews. It is also used as a thickener, the leaves are also known to help reduce disease-causing inflammation. The most popular way most use it is by drinking "okra water" . They make the water by taking the whole okra pod and soak it in water overnight. The nutrients in the skin and seed pods will absorb into the water. They suggest if your planning on using it as an holistic treatment for diabetes you should contact your Doctor. It has been shown that using okra blocks the absorption of a drug called "metformin" used to help regulate blood sugar levels.

Okra contains many health benefits. It contains potassium, Vitamin B and Vitamin C, folic acid, calcium. Researcher's suggest it helps control blood sugar in type 1,2 and gestational diabetes. Even though research is in it's early stages they have studied okra water is known to improve blood sugar levels in pregnant rats that had gestational diabetes.
