But given that we now have the ability to practice that empathy, is it still okay to eat them and farm them despite having plenty of alternative food sources to fulfil our nutritional needs? Interesting discussion and definitely something worth pondering over. For me, I grew up with a vegetarian mother who refused to eat meat for two reasons : 1. The taste of it was deterring to her. 2. The ethical issue of killing another sentient animal needlessly (in her eyes) for food when she could easily have sustenance in a large variety of vegetables and meat alternatives.  ~ Helga
