October 4, 1957 - Soviet Union launches Sputnik

# The Western World in Shock

On this day the Russians aka Soviet Union launched their space program with Sputnik No. 1 .  Sputnik was the world’s first artificial satellite hit into space at exactly 10:29 p.m. Moscow time from the Tyuratam launch base in the Kazakh Republic with a  diameter of 22 inches and weighed 184 pounds and circled Earth once every hour and 36 minutes.

The US was shocked during that cold war centuries - however Sputnik was officially launched to correspond with the International Geophysical Year, a solar period that the International Council of Scientific Unions declared would be ideal for the launching of artificial satellites to study Earth and the solar system. Well, we all know that it was a sign of power by the soviets that motivated the US to develop or speed up their developments efforts too. A clear Space War innovation and race on both sides, glad over now - however other dangerous nations come up with silly shit.
