THE NEED FOR SELF CONTROL

Self control is the ability to live one's life one at a time. It also means to be content, to be satisfied with something one has. Why this admonition? It is necessary because we are strangers here on earth and we are going to leave it one day by any means. Self control is also one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit, it helps a believer to do things to an extent and not out of control. Self control can be applied in every areas of our lives; the way we talk, dress, eat,walk, and relate with others. Greed makes someone to lose control.

St Paul admonishes Timothy by emphasizing on the need to be self controlled. Money is described as the root of all kinds of evil. It is a means of exchange. You can bear with me that if one doesn't have money, he or she will not be recognized and is why people commit all sorts of atrocities to get money. Some people dupe, kill, rob, and kidnap just to make money. Jesus asked a question in mark 8:36: " What shall it profit a man to gain the whole world and loose his soul?''. Unfortunately, people have not tried to find the answer to the question. The quest for materialism is on the increase and because of that, people who have been ordained to become powerful instrument in the hands of God are nowhere to be found, because their minds are so much saturated with the affairs of this world. Women are after the fashion that is vogue and also hairstyles. Men are after cars, the latest models. The youths are interested in communication gadgets, phones in vogue, wears, music, and jumping into immoral relationships. The devil tempted Jesus using all manners of flashy things. Jesus conquered him (devil) because He was self controlled. He knew he came to achieve a must-win task. Thanks be to God that he won the battle.

Greed made Cain to kill his brother Abel for no just cause (Genesis 4:8). How do you feel if your neighbor in the market in the market sells more goods than you? Do you help him or her to attend to customers or do you feel irritated? If you attend a function, such as a weeding or a birthday party, how do you eat and drink? Are you the type that makes sure everything finishes before you leave? some men will drink themselves to stupor. It is not supposed to be so. We need to also apply self control in our words (Colosians 4:6).

@iloegbunamagnes self control may lead to verbal abuse ,violence, divorce, needless debt, unwanted pregnancy etc . All of us have such tendecy because we are imperfect but imitating God who is always patient with us will help us control this impulse. always @theheralds
