[As promised last week](https://steemit.com/caturday/@imcesca/caturday2018), from now onwards I will use my weekly #caturday posts to look back on fictional cats that I’ve particularly loved through time or, alternatively, on works of fiction that I’ve enjoyed which had cats in them as a prominent feature or recurring characters.
In doing this, I’ve elected to include both domestic cats and big cats, in order to have a wider pool of characters to chose from and include more topics.
It just so happens that this first week’s feline is, in fact, a big cat.
A very old big cat.
Specifically, a ***smilodon***, also know as *saber-toothed tiger*.

What I know about the smilodon is that it lived during the Pleistocene and mostly in the Americas (most skeletons were found in the L.A. area: very posh!).
This picture is not a faithful reconstruction, as its paws are supposed to be bigger than that. Also, the smilodon, albeit being part of the *felidae* family, is not a close relative of cats or even tigers: it’s an off-set branch of the evolutionary family which didn’t evolve further. Therefore no descendants of the smilodon reached our present times.
Not the fittest of the pride, but very cool nonetheless.
All this to say that no, I wasn’t a particular fan of Discovery Channel, as a kid, and I’m far too old to start this review from the *Ice Age* franchise. I was, much more prosaically, a fan of ***Mighty Morphin Power Rangers***, and the first “cat” I remember growing fond of, was the Yellow Ranger’s smilodon *zord* (or battle robot).

Here they are. This isn’t the original cast that I remember, but the concept remains quite similar, except that originally the costumes were more color than white.
Also, isn’t it weird that despite the costumes being basically a tight onesie it’s the girls that have a little skirt, covering the lower part or their torso, while it’s the boys who’d be more in need of coverage in that area? But I digress.
In retrospect, Power Rangers are actually a pretty juvenile product, but I was no more than 7 or 8 at the time, and I really enjoyed them. Of course, when you play at any TV series with grade school friends, your choice of character is pretty straightforward: boys play male characters, girls play female characters. Blondes play blondes, brunettes play brunettes. The original Power Rangers cast had no blonde girl, but I’ve never been a fan of pink, so I always chose the Yellow Ranger, even though the original Yellow was a tiny Asian-American girl (*Trini Kwan*, played by Vietnamese Thuy Trang).
For the non-initiated, *Mighty Morphin Power Rangers* is a huge live-action mecha superhero franchise born from the adaptation for Western audiences of the Japanese *Super Sentai* franchise by the American company Saban Entertainment. Basically, most mecha footage and special effects came directly from the original Japanese product, while everything else was reshot with American actors, characters and locations, in order to make it more appealing for Western audiences.
The premise is the usual evil alien overlord wanting to conquer Earth through a subsequent array of monsters sent to do its bidding, being fought monster by monster by a group of teens (usually five) with special powers. These teens, in particular, are granted by their wise mentor special suits, which protect their identities and give them enhanced fighting abilities, and big battle robots in the shape of animals, which can combine to form the ultimate fighting bot.
That’s what *zords* are, the individual fighting robots. And in the first seasons they’re all inspired by prehistoric animals.
To this day, I don’t know wether I preferred Trini to Kimberly (the Pink Ranger, who had a pterodactyl *zord*) because I liked the saber-toothed tiger more, or if I started liking the saber-toothed tiger because my Ranger of choice was Trini.
But I do remember also being very taken by one of the bad guys, Goldar, a lion/griffin/manticore type monster who probably had a wickedly sarcastic personality (because that’s what I seem to respond more to). Yeah, very fetching, I know! Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any image of Goldar that I could share in this post, so you’ll either have to trust me on his improbable charm or go check Google images. Yes, he’s the gold monstrosity with a blue face. You’re welcome.
But he’s still a feline of sorts, so there you go, double entry for this week’s caturday!
The whole franchise is huge, with multiple series and reboots shot throughout the years, thanks to the never ending material provided by *Super Sentai*. The teen protagonists change quite often, and the *zords* are constantly evolved.
Personally, I only remember the original round of characters from the first three series, so either I quickly grew out of it or only the first three seasons were initially aired in Italy. Besides, I remember feeling very offended when the Tommy, the latest addition to the group, supplanted Jason as team leader, so I probably wouldn’t have been a good sport about all the subsequent cast changes.

I did go see the latest movie, though. I enjoyed it, but thought the kids’ personal drama was a little overplayed. Generally speaking, it was all way too PC and forcefully inclusive for my tastes (up to the African American kid not being the Black Ranger and the Asian American not being the Yellow Ranger because I guess it would have sounded bad when they call each other by color).
I’m all for inclusion in movies, but when done smoothly, not when forced down our throats in what is meant to be basic entertainment.
The Yellow Ranger’s *zord* is not the only fictional smilodon that I’ve encountered through the years. **Other popular smilodon that I’ve enjoyed are:**
* Diego and Shira, from the *Ice Age* franchise
* Sabretooth, the X-Men villain and brother to Wolverine
* Raikou, the Pokémon, was also apparently inspired by the saber-toothed tiger

*Nella specie, uno* **smilodonte**, *meglio noto anche come* tigre dai denti a sciabola.
*Ciò che so dello smilodonte è che visse nel Pleistocene e più che altro nelle Americhe (la maggior parte dei resti sono stati rinvenuti nella zona di Los Angeles: molto elegante!).
La foto che più in altro lo ritrae non è ritenuta una ricostruzione fedele, in quanto le zampe dovrebbero essere più grandi. Inoltre, lo smilodonte, pur rientrando nella famiglia dei* felidae, *non è parente stretto dei gatti e nemmeno delle tigri: si tratta infatti di un “ramo cadetto” della famiglia evolutiva, che non si è ulteriormente evoluto. Perciò alcun discendente degli smilodonti è giunto ai giorni nostri.
Non il più adatto del branco, quindi, ma comunque parecchio figo.*
*Tutti ciò per dire che no, non ero una fan sfegatata dei documentari naturistici, da piccola, e sono troppo vecchia per iniziare questa rivista dalla serie de* L’Era Glaciale. *Ero, molto più prosaicamente, una fan dei* **Power Rangers** *e il primo “gatto” televisivo di cui serbo ricordi affettuosi è lo smilodonte che fungeva da* zord *(robot da battaglia) del Yellow Ranger.*
*Eccoli lì, lì vedete nella seconda foto lassù. Quello raffigurato non è il cast originale che ricordo io, ma il concetto rimane lo stesso, eccetto che originariamente nei costumi era preponderante il colore di ciascun Ranger, piuttosto che il bianco. Tra l’altro, non vi pare bizzarro che nonostante i costumi siano sostanzialmente delle tutine attillate siano le ragazze ad avere il gonnellino inguinale, mentre sarebbe molto più utile ai ragazzi coprire quella zona? Ma divago.
Col senno di poi, i Power Ranger sono un prodotto parecchio trash, ma all’epoca non avevo più di 7-8 anni e mi piacevano un sacco. Ovviamente, quando giochi a qualche serie TV con i compagni di scuola, la scelta del personaggio è abbastanza univoca: i maschi fanno i maschi e le femmine fanno le femmine. Le bionde fanno le bionde, le more fanno le more. Il cast originario dei Power Rangers non aveva bionde, ma non mi è mai piaciuto il rosa, quindi io sceglievo sempre il Yellow Ranger, anche se era una minuta ragazzina asiatica (*Trini Kwan, *interpretata dalla vietnamita Thuy Trang).*
*Per i profani,* Power Rangers *è il nome di un franchise collegato ad una serie TV live di supereroi e robottoni, che nasce dall’adattamento per un pubblico occidentale da parte dell’americana Saban Entrrtainment del franchise giapponese* Super Sentai.
*In pratica, tutte le scene mecha e di combattimento sono prese pari pari dall’originale giapponese, mentre le altre scene sono state rigirate con attori, personaggi e location americani, per renderlo più appetibile al un pubblico occidentale.
La premessa è la solita: una cattivona aliena vuole conquistare la Terra attraverso un arsenale di mostri mandati ad eseguire gli ordini uno dopo l’altro, contrastati da un gruppetto di adolescenti (in genere cinque) con poteri speciali. Questi adolescenti, in particolare, ricevono dal loro saggio mentore delle armature speciali, che proteggono le loro identità e ne aumentano le capacità di combattimento, oltre a grossi robot da battaglia di forma animale, che possono combinarsi per creare il super robot definitivo.
Questi sono gli* zord, *i singoli robot da combattimento. E nelle prime stagioni sono ispirati ad animali preistorici.*
*A tutt’oggi, non so se preferissi Trini a Kimberly (il Pink Ranger, con uno* zord *pterodattilo) perché mi piaceva la tigre dai denti a sciabola o se abbia iniziato a piacermi la tigre dai denti a sciabola perché il mio Ranger di riferimento era Trini.
Ricordo, comunque, che mi prendeva molto anche uno dei cattivi, Goldar, un mostro tipo leone/grifone/manticora che probabilmente aveva una personalità maliziosamente sarcastica (visto che in genere è il tipo di personalità che più mi attira). Già, molto affascinante, lo so! Sfortunatamente non sono riuscita a trovare un’immagine di Goldar che potessi usare in questo post, quindi dovete fidarvi di me riguardo al suo improbabile charme oppure buttare un occhio su Google immagini. Sì, è la mostruosità dorata con la faccia blu. Prego, non c’è di che.
Ma è comunque un felino, più o meno, quindi voila: doppio felino per questo caturday!*
*Il franchise, nel complesso, è enorme, con numerosissime serie TV e reboot girati nel corso degli anni, grazie all’infinito materiale di* Super Sentai. *I giovani protagonisti cambiano abbastanza spesso e gli* zord *evolvono continuamente.
Personalmente, ricordo solo il cast originale delle prime tre serie, quindi o mi sono stufata presto oppure in un primo momento in Italia trasmisero solo quelle serie. D’altra parte, ricordo di essermi sentita offesissima quando Tommy, l’ultimo arrivato, sostituì Jason come leader del gruppo, quindi probabilmente non avrei preso bene i continui cambi dei personaggi.*
*Sono andata a vedere il film uscito l’anno scorso, comunque, ma ho trovato che le storie dei singoli personaggi fossero anche troppi lacrimevoli. Generalmente parlando, era troppo politicamente corretto e inclusivo per i miei gusti (fino al punto di non dare il ruolo di Black Ranger al ragazzo di colore e quello di Yellow Ranger all’asiatico perché evidentemente sarebbe stato brutto a quel punto che si chiamassero per colore tra loro).
Sono favorevole all’inclusione nei media, ma quando fatta con stile, non quando viene sbattuta gratuitamente in faccia allo spettatore in un film che dovrebbe essere di puro intrattenimento.*
*Lo* zord *del Yellow Ranger non è l’unico smilodonte che ho incontrato negli anni.* ***Altri smilodonti famosi che mi sono piaciuti sono:***
