### Who would have thought that this favorite vegetable of the Ilocanos have such an anti-aging properties?

A very common shrub in everyone's backyard where they just grow very easily, as common as the moringa trees, they are found all over the country. In our backyard alone while growing up, i don't remember anyone in my household at any point planting them as such. Perhaps for the reason that, although the only edible parts are the leaves, these plants have fruits that full of tiny seeds and are left undisturbed. On maturity, the tips break and the whole fruit gets exposed, its' seeds just fall to the ground. The whole plants are uprooted later on as they dried up after some time.

 I accidentally found them this morning, all brown, compared to how they were weeks before when foraging for some veggies. Normally, we just leave the dried fruits and let then fall off, but as I am starting to have another vegetable plot in the backyard, I thought I might as well add them to have new growth. Let them grow riot with the rest.

An article stated that it is rich in [Vitamin E](http://indianjute.blogspot.com/p/medicinal-use-herbal-use-of-jute-jute.html?m=1), making it an anti-aging veggies, and also rich in antioxidants. This is a bit surprising, as I for one have not done any previous research regarding this vegetable. It's so common that it's been taken for granted, and for so long it is just food. Imagine the benefits!

#### <center>Food preparations</center>

The most notable dish of "saluyot" is **adobo** where it is steamed with a drop of soy sauce, vinegar and crushed garlic. These ingredients make it similar to chicken or pork adobo. Other preparations include pork, beef or vegetable stew.

Some people aren't used to its' slimy texture when cooked, but accordingly it can be eaten as a salad or cooked slightly if preferred.

In the Philippines, if not in one's backyard, they can be found in supermarkets, as well as in the wet market. Abroad, Asian stores would have them but frozen, although on occasions in a Bangladeshi store in London, i have found fresh ones. As for the seeds, just scatter them in a damp soil as they don't need any maintenance.
