최근 도요타의 아성이 흔들리고 있습니다. 전세계 자동차 기업 시가총액 순위를 살펴보면 테슬라의 시가총액이 한화로 321조원, 도요타가 251조원으로 이미 1위를 확실히 내주었다고 봐야합니다.

전기차 시장이 아직 기존 시장만 못하기 때문에 매출면에서는 토요타가 폭스바겐에 이어 2위를 점유하고 있지만 떠오르는 전기차 시장에 비하면 이제 디젤이나 가솔린 시장은 지는 해가 될 우려가 있습니다.

오래전 구입하기엔 가격이 만만치 않았던 '퍼스널 컴퓨터'들이 어느 순간 성능을 일취월장하고 가격이 다운되면서 'pc'란 이름으로 책상을 점령해 나갔는데, 이제 그런 과정이 자동차 시장에 불어닥칠지도 모르겠습니다.

전기차는 상대적으로 간단한 구조와 핵심 부품의 위상 변화로 기존 가솔린 시장과는 판이한 시장을 형성할 수 있습니다. 가장 큰 영향은 제조 단가의 하락입니다. 이미 몇 유로만 내면 월임대가 가능한 제품이 유럽에 출시되었고, 공유차량으로 쓰던 전기차들이 헐값에 매물로 나오고 있는 실정입니다.

이제 제조 단가를 획기적으로 낮추지 못하는 이상 특정 럭셔리 영역을 제외한 대중화 영역에서는 발붙이기가 힘들게 될테죠. 그 어느때보다 생산 기술과 아이디어에 혁신이 필요한 시점입니다.
