Many times we talk about culture and we don't know its meaning, but we follow what we think it is. Most people when they hear about culture relate it to art, literature, music, etc... Sometimes it also relates to good manners of educated man, good behavior, ie he is a cultured person.

## Culture has certain characteristics:

We can classify in two areas: **Academic Culture** and **Popular culture** 

## Academic culture.

The field of academic culture is characterized because the cultural phenomena it produces come from small groups of people. They are intellectual elites or power center that impose their own culture as the best, appropriate, which is devoid of popular expressions. Through it, powerful intellectual elaborations are made (for example, systems of scientists and philosophers). They impose norms or criteria of conduct, they establish the aesthetic, legal, religious, political, economic and social models that direct the relations in a society. This culture has the power of decision and enjoys prestige.

It is transmitted in a formal way, synthesized through institutions created especially for such purposes (Academy of Ballet, painting, schools, universities, etc.)

## Popular Culture.

The field of popular culture is characterized because it is produced and elaborated by the people in a spontaneous way. It is also considered a collective patrimony, not of a particular person. It is transmitted in an informal way through oral, imitative and experiential learning.

It produces in the community its own specific identity creating bonds of solidarity among its participants. Popular culture is based on direct relationships between people. It responds ordinarily to local specifications, the people feel it as theirs and enrich it.

Folkloric expressions, handicrafts, dances and typical dances, oral literature, etc., are manifestations of popular culture. And this manifests itself in diversity of artistic expressions: poetry, music, painting, sculpture, carving, handicrafts, etc., in these expressions one of the main characteristics is the creative and spontaneous power that arises from the popular artists.

His works for his beauty, his simplicity, where there is no academic work, are easy to understand by the people who are quickly identified with them and in some cases come to feel it as a collective creation.

In the musical genre as the, in the naive painting, so called because it is born from the need to express the creative concerns that have the common man, are already known the names of Barbarian Rivas, Feliciano Savall, Esteban Mendoza, Víctor Millán, etc...
