Didn’t give up
Talking to my pillow,
Or your spirit, 
During those nights of need.

Of empty rooms
That echo with the sound 
Of your high heels.

I keep placing
And misplacing things—
Losing everything 
Except this damned obsession
With you.

Can’t you hear 
The whisper of my soul—
Can’t you sense me
Thinking of you?

You first came
As a cloud trailing rain,
Leaving wet footprints 
Everywhere,
Without apology 
Or the need to explain.

And I let you.

After all those years
I have no regrets
Or complaints
Other than a lover’s despair.

So, don’t offer explanations 
Or start sentences with because…
I’m desolate and stranded
With clouds like steamship smoke 
And bleary streets abandoned—
