###  This is my entry for #peoplephotography created by @worldcapture.   The Bangkok Railway station or Hua Lumphong station has been my old friend since I was a kid.  My  Chinese grandmother’s house used to be in the small alley just opposite the station!  But the motorway has taken the best part of my childhood away!  At least I still have my old railway station to give me a sense of security and connection to my happy childhood and my dear grandmother.

As if fate is playing with me, I have to travel by train  regularly to my country house every month.  So, I have become a familiar face for several workers at the station.  They have become my friends whose smiles always cheer me up.   We would have brief chats along the platform.  This smiling lady is responsible for distributing blankets and bed sheets to the night train to Nongkhai.

Whenever she saw me struggling with my boxes and bags on the platform, she would rush to help me and carry my heavy boxes to my seat for me .  She refused to receive my tip as she wanted to tell me that she just wanted to help me.   The last time I met her, she just had a funeral for her mother.  She sat down with me and told me the whole story of her mother’s last days and how her siblings helped with the funeral arrangement.  She was very pleased that she did everything that could possibly be required at the hospital and funeral.   Her mother had adopted four strayed dogs who have become members of her family.  Her mother asked everyone to continue looking after these dogs with love and care.

So, this small lady has these dogs to remind her of mother’s love and kindness.  She told me that these dogs understood Thai and were very smart as they always slept in her mother’s bedroom.  Her mother picked them up as puppies by the road side.  The mother dog probably got killed by cars leaving these hungry puppies wandering by the road.  She told me that her mother looked after them as if they were her babies.   I was amazed by this lady, who had little education and less opportunity in life, revealed her strength and stamina for hard work and steadfastness for her family.  I wish my family had that strength and satisfaction with what we already had.  The  strive to get more and the obsession with monetary security tend to spoil the ability of people to be happy with their present blessings.

This man has been working as a porter at the station for a two years.  He had to take all the used blankets and bed sheets to the laundry vans.  All the trolleys at the station have become very old and rusty so he had to push the trolly with all his strength.  Even though he was exhausted, he still laughed and smiled for me, I told him to pretend to faint too!

These porters at the station have my sympathy as they are really very poor working class who prefer to work honestly at low pay rather than become thieves or criminals.  These men, young and old, just took the train journey to make a new life in Bangkok.  Some of them would be singled out or recruited by gangs of brokers looking for cheap labour at the station.  They are very quiet and discrete ;  they would ask the chosen targets whether they would like to have a job.  Those who have nothing to do would walk around the station and probably sleep on the platform benches at night.  Some would apply to work as porters at the station.   Younger men tend to work for a few days; the older and slower men would stay much longer.

In the past when I had to carry several boxes onto the train, I would use the porter service and give the person a tip.  Sometimes people just wouldn’t use porter service at all, so they were left without lunch money the whole day.  When the hungry porter saw me, he would ask me to buy him dinner as he didn’t eat the whole day.  The fee for carrying a box is 10 baht or about 10 cents; so I would urge travelers by train to engage the porter service.   This would give them some hope for holding righteous livelihood amidst poverty a bit longer.

เราชอบสถานีรถไฟหัวลำโพงมาก  เพราะว่าบ้านของคุณย่า   เคยอยู่ในตรอกตรงข้างสถานีรถไฟ  สมัยเด็กๆ เราเคยวิ่งเล่นอยู่แถวนั้น  แต่ปัจจุบันบ้านคุณย่าไม่มีแล้ว บริเวณนั้นกลายเป็นทางขึ้นทางด่วนไปเสียแล้ว  ทำให้เราไม่สามารถไปเดินเล่นย้อนอดีตได้อีก  นึกแล้วก็เสียดายที่ไม่ได้ไปถ่ายรูปไว้ในสมัยก่อน  แต่ก็เหมือนโชคชะตาจะล้อเล่นกับเรา  เพราะเราต้องไปขึ้นรถไฟที่สถานี. เพื่อเดินทางไปหนองคายทุกเดือน ทำให้เรารู้สึกเหมือนได้กลับไประลึก ถึงอดีตบ่อยๆ ทำให้เราหวนคิดถึงเวลาที่เป็นเด็กแสนซน กับคุณย่าที่แสนใจดีของเรา

เราเดินทางบ่อยจนคนที่นั่นจำเราได้. และทำให้เรามีเพื่อนคุยระหว่างรอรถไฟ  พนักงานผู้หญิงที่ขนผ้าห่มและผ้าปูที่นอนขึ้นรถไฟตู้นอน. กลายเป็นเพื่อนเราไปแล้ว  เธอเป็นคนน่ารักมากและใจดีด้วย. เวลาที่เธอเห็นเราแบกของหลายชิ้น เธอก็จะวิ่งเข้ามาข่วยขนของขึ้นรถไฟให้ถึงที่นั่งเลย   พอเราจะให้เงินทิป เธอก็ไม่ยอมรับด้วย  เราก็ได้แต่ขอบใจเธอ  ครั้งล่าสุดเธอเล่าให้ฟังว่าพึ่งทำงานศพคุณแม่เสร็จ.  เราก็เลยนั่งคุยถามไถ่ทุกข์สุขกันนาน  ผู้หญิงคนนี้เก่งและอึดมาก  เธอแบกภาระไว้มาก แต่ก็ด้วยพลังแห่งความรัก เธอพร้อมที่จะทำเพื่อแม่และครอบครัว. ทำให้ครอบครัวเป็นปึกแผ่นและอบอุ่น

เราชอบใช้บริการพนักงานขนของขึ้นรถไฟที่สถานี  เพราะราคาถูกมาก และให้บริการอย่างซื่อสัตย์ พนักงานขนของที่นั่นจำเราได้  เพราะเราเคยขนของหลายกล่องขึ้นรถไฟ  เราเห็นใจคนพวกนี้มาก เพราะมีการศึกษาน้อยมาก มาจากครอบครัวยากจน แต่ก็เลือกทำงานใช้แรงงานโดยสุจริต.  บางวันคนเดินทางไม่ยอมเรียกใช้บริการขนของเลย ทำให้พนักงานไม่มีเงินกินข้าวกลางวัน  บางคนถึงขนาดต้องมาขอเงินกินข้าวเพราะเขาไม่ไหวแล้ว. เราก็เลี้ยงข้าวเย็นเขาด้วยความเต็มใจ   ค่าขนของก็ถูกมาก เพียงชิ้นละ10 บาท เราก็แถมให้อีกทุกครั้ง เพราะ เขาก็ได้ค่าขนของจริงคง ไม่ถึง5 บาทต่อชิ้นหรอก  เราควรจะช่วยคนจนที่ยังยอมลำบากทำงานอย่างสุจริต.  อย่าปล่อยให้เขาต้องกลายเป็นโจรลักทรัพย์  เพราะเขาทนความแล้งน้ำใจ และความอยุติธรรมของสังคมไม่ไหวแล้ว สังคมจะกลายเป็นที่ที่ไม่ปลอดภัย และไม่น่าอยู่เลยในอนาคต

I don’t like the idea of moving to the new railway station  in two  years’ time at all.  The new station looks like an overgrown robot city made of stainless steel and blocks of  cements!   The future looks very unfriendly and threatening to me; I miss my big grandmother to protect me from all danger like in the past.
