Trivia #8 - Air conditioner was not made for human originally!
Now it is summer time in my city Hong Kong, and it is really really hot! Every one turns on their air conditioners. While enjoying the cool air blown from the air conditioners, have you ever thought of saying thanks to the one who invent air conditioners?

Surprisingly, air conditioner was not made for human at the very first beginning!

### History of air conditioners

In 1902, Willis Carrier invented an air conditioner for a lithographing and publishing company, with the aim of controlling temperature and also humidity so as to improve the printing quality. Because papers and ink are easily affected by temperature and humidity, the printed matters used to have inconsistent colors and were always misaligned because of the wrinkled papers.

As time goes by, air conditioner was slowly extended to workplaces and households, so that we can enjoy a comfortable environment during summer times! However, air conditioners have high power consumption, thus they are not quite environmentally friendly. Therefore, try to reduce the use of air conditioners or set them at a higher temperature whenever possible!

That's a nice story. I didn't know air-conditioner was invented for printing before reading this. It seems that many inventions are by accident, just like Coke was not invented as a beverage too. Hope you will share more interesting stories with us in the near future.

That's interesting. I think back in the past when global warming wasn't taking much effect air conditioners were playing a much less important role and that justifies why air conditioners had other uses than for serving for humans. Luckily with that not-so-intentional-for-human invention we can live more comfortably in this day and age!

There's one thing that is quite worth discussing. We can use air conditioner in both summer and winter. In summer it gives out cold air and in winter it gives out warm air. Which one does more harm to the environment? If we focus on global warming only, maybe using air conditioner in winter is worse!

I think you have a point here. It's not commonplace in my city to use the air conditioner in winter, considering that it is not really cold here even in the winter time, so I've not thought about it.
