# The light shineth in darkness -
Darkness, in the Bible, usually signifies obliviousness, blame, or hopelessness. See Isaiah 9:1-2; Matthew 4:16; Acts 26:18; Ephesians 5:8, Ephesians 5:11; Romans 13:12. It alludes here to an insidious and unmindful individuals. When it is said that "the light shineth in darkness," it is implied that the Lord Jesus came to educate an unmindful, misguided, and insidious world. This has dependably been the situation. It was so when he sent his prophets; so amid his own particular service; thus in each age since. His endeavors to edify and spare men have been similar to light attempting to infiltrate a thick, thick cloud; and however a couple of beams may puncture the agony, yet the colossal mass is as yet an impervious shade.
# Comprehend it not -
This word signifies "conceded" it not, or "got" it not. "Comprehend," with us, intends to "get it." This isn't the significance of the first. The darkness did not "get" or "concede" the beams of light; the shades were thick to the point that the light couldn't enter them; or, to drop the figure, men were so uninformed, so blameworthy, so corrupted, that they didn't value the estimation of his directions; they scorned and dismissed him. Thus it is still. The colossal mass of men, soaked in wrongdoing, won't get his lessons, and be illuminated and spared by him. Sin dependably blinds the brain to the magnificence and excellency of the character of the Lord Jesus. It disables the brain to get his guidelines, similarly as "haziness" has no liking for "light;" and if the one exists, the other must be uprooted.
