# TRYING TO UNDERSTAND THE SCRIPTURAL JOY.

If we consider the numerous emphasis about joy in the scriptures, then we can see how important that joy is to our lives so that we can pursue it always.

Western culture is the main reason why we find it hard to take hold of the biblical view point. Yes, western culture portrayed a dilution of definition and description to what joy really stands for.

Let me bring it home; we often confuse happiness with joy which supposed not to be so, when we take a flashback on beatitudes in the book of Matthew 5 verse 3-11, with the traditional translations, they reads; Jesus said: “Blessed are those that mourn.....Blessed are the poor in spirit.....Blessed are the meek”, emphasis in verse 3-5 added, and so on.

But however, sometimes, translators adopt this modern vernacular which am talking about and tell us that Jesus said ‘happy’
instead of ‘blessed’ which was actually used in traditional translations.

I in particular pulse and cringe a little whenever I read across such, not really because I’m opposed rather to happiness, my concern is that happiness as a word has been trivialized and also sentimentalized in western culture which almost the whole world is being influenced with and as a result, it now connotes a certain degree of superficiality.
