I am writing about my experience wearing masks in Canada. I put the “trigger warning” just in case for the title because I am writing about a sensitive topic. Nova Scotia, Canada is also getting serious about the new Coronavirus.  Recently Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s wife tested positive for COVID-19 and Mr. Trudeau is also isolating himself now. He came to visit Nova Scotia two weeks ago and he met a lot of people.

Before this shocking news, I had to go to the hospital for my regular bloodwork because of my health condition. I was wearing a mask just in case to not catch any serious sickness because of my disease. My disease gets worse when my immune system goes down. The lady who organizes the waiting room for the bloodwork is always very cheerful and chatty with patients. However, when she saw me, she stopped smiling and said to me, “Stand near this wall” and then “Go left.” Wow... I felt very weird in my mind. Then, when I said “Hi” to the nurse, she immediately asked me “Why you are wearing a mask!?” without greeting me. I was in shock for a second and told her “I have a condition so I am protecting myself to not catch any sickness from this hospital.” She continued “Well, I have a right to ask this question to you because I have my health condition too.” And she didn’t confirm my birthday or name and just started drawing  my blood not gently. My arm was swollen because  she didn’t select the right spot. 

I understand that this nurse was reacting to my mask but this is a hospital. There are many risks for everyone. I told her “Please don’t worry if I'm sick, I went to a  different section outside. I came here for this bloodwork. I am living here. Why don’t you wear a mask then? Wearing masks is not a strange thing in Asia to protect from sickness .” And then she became calm and started talking naturally.

Phew... I feel this is a very difficult situation for everybody and I understand that we are all facing a chaotic situation now. Also, I can understand that people’s understanding of masks is for only serious sickness in Western countries but I don't want to have a risk because of my disease. Finally, my area became more careful today because of the Prime Minister’s wife’s news. Many schools started closing, and events have  canceled in Canada. When I had a haircut today, the beautician also asked me private questions.  “Did you go to any different countries?” “Where are you from?” And she also talked about the new Coronavirus. Her attitude was very gentle but she said she has a fear with customers. I hope that this situation is going to settle down someday soon.

カナダでマスクを着用することについて、自分の経験を書きたいと思います。人によっては少しセンシティブな内容かと思い、念のためトリガーワーニングとタイトルにつけました。ここカナダのノバスコシア州では、ジャスティン・トルドー首相の妻が新型コロナウィルスの陽性結果が出たとの発表を受け、深刻に受け止めています。トルドー首相は自ら隔離しています。トルドー首相は最近ノバスコシア州を訪れたばかりです。その際たくさんの人に会っています。

このニュースが出る前の事ですが、定期血液検査のために病院を訪れました。わたしの持病は免疫力が低下した時にリスクが高くなるので、念のためマスクを着用しました。血液検査部門の受付担当の女性は普段よくお喋りをする明るい方なのですが、わたしを見た途端に笑顔がなくなり、「壁に沿って立って。」「左に行って。」と言ってきました。内心わー…と思いつつ、血液検査の看護師さんに挨拶するや否や「なんでマスクつけてるの？！」と挨拶無しに質問してきました。ちょっとショックだったのですが、「持病持ちのため、病院で病気をもらいたくないので、念のため予防してます。」と答えると、「わたしには聞く権利があるのよ！わたしも持病持ちだから！」と言ってわたしの名前も生年月日も確認せずに、乱暴に針を刺したので、後から腕がかなり腫れ上がりました。

看護師さんは、わたしのマスクに反応したのだということはわかりますが、ここは病院です。みんなたくさんのリスクに囲まれています。「もし病気ならば外の特別室に行っています。ここには血液検査に来ただけです。わたしはカナダ在住です。あなたも心配ならマスクをしたらどうですか？それにアジアでは予防でマスクを着用するのは不可思議な行動ではありませんよ。」と言ったら、落ち着いて静かになりました。

ふう。これはみんなにとって大変難しい状況ですし、カオス状態なのはよく理解できます。それに西洋の国ではマスクをつけるのは重病人のみという認識がある事もわかります。でも自分の持病をリスクにさらして、マスク無しで立ち向かう勇気はわたしにはありません。今日はトルドー首相の妻のニュースが発表されたからか、みな真剣に受け止めだしていました。カナダではさまざまな学校が休校になり、イベントもキャンセルが相次いでいます。美容室に行った時も、美容師さんから「どこか違う国に最近行った？」とか「どこの国出身？」などプライベートな質問をされました。新型コロナウィルスの話に触れ、接客も怖いと言っていました。彼女の態度が穏やかだったので、心を開いて話すことができました。この状況が一刻も早くおさまることを願います。
