From what I can tell, older feminists were more concerned over giving females more financial independence which I see no problem with. 

The problem is that even back then, the idea feminism had of power was the same one as it is today. They think money = power over one's own life, this is false. They would see men going to work and think that's what they wanted to be doing when that is what they have been pressured to do since birth. They think it's humiliating for a wife to ask the husband for money, but they don't think it's humiliating that men are considered criminals unless they have a job. They can totally get behind a campaign to make women believe evidence of victimhood can be found when you are advised to go home in the company of a male for security, but they don't care to mention that the guy has to go back home alone. 

They will never tell you about the men that marry not to be seen by society as a danger, as someone who didn't adapt. They will never tell you about all the guys that would walk beside a woman not for her security but for their own security, because it's less likely a cop will think they are a threat if they are a husband or a father.

It goes way way deeper than that, but no matter what wording I use they simply don't want to hear it. They refuse to accept a world where women could suffer equality to men from different expectations, they refuse to accept a world where men could suffer more. It has to be that women suffer more than men, no other story is acceptable. Some of them don't stop there, some of them want men to recognize that they are the cause of female suffering by their actions or inaction.
