# When I was young, my late father brought me a book. I always loved SF novels, and the first one he could get was “The Space Merchants” by Frederick J. Pohl and Cyril M. Kornbluth. It’s a gloomy, satirical story of a hyper-developed consumerism, seen through the eyes of an advertising executive…

Science fiction is never born out of thin air. It is a result of a thinking process that involves projection of some current trend to the extreme, and then describing a future world which results out of that extreme. The Novel of Pohl and Kornbluth was written in 1952, and published in 1953. Then it may have looked like a peak of dark imagination, but today… Just look this short description:

> In a vastly overpopulated world, businesses have taken the place of governments and now hold all political power. States exist merely to ensure the survival of huge trans-national corporations. Advertising has become hugely aggressive and by far the best-paid profession. Through advertising, the public is constantly deluded into thinking that the quality of life is improved by all the products placed on the market. Some of the products contain addictive substances designed to make consumers dependent on them…

Can you recognize the world?

Today, most of the basic presumptions of the novel are in the advanced phase. We have a huge trans-national corporations which have already swallowed states, and they intensely manipulate minds of consumers changing the valuable informations with a pure advertising in mainstream media — that also belongs to megacorporations.
