While a few of the @little-peppers were helping @papa-pepper down on the land yesterday, Pinkie-Pepper started telling @papa-pepper about some of the wild plants around them, and what they were good for.

@papa-pepper seized the opportunity and grabbed the camera to start recording. This post is the result of that experience, and we plan on making some more posts along this line in the future. We will try to include both a video and a few photos in each episode of this series.

## <center>MULLEIN</center>

Mullein in a very helpful wild plant that can be used in a few ways. In a pinch, you could use it as toilet paper out in the woods, but that’s not how we usually use it.

We like to harvest and dry it each summer and fall and so that we have it available to use in the winter months. When you make a tea from crushed up dry Mullein leaves, it can be a powerful decongestant. @mama-pepper and @papa-pepper like to make tea with it in the winter when colds start coming on. @mama-pepper has even used it to unclog milk ducts when she was breastfeeding little Sweet-Pepper.

It is easy to recognize and the @little-peppers have grown quite familiar with it. They never uproot an entire plant, but with periodically harvest some nice leaves off of the Mullein plants that they encounter, and bring them to @mama-pepper to dry for winter. This is a blessing for @mama-pepper, because Mullein in good to have on hand, and she doesn’t even have to go out and pick any because the @little-peppers do all the work for her.

# <center>WILD CHIVES</center>

Around where we live the Wild Chives are everywhere. They have the same great flavor that the Chives at the store or in the garden have, they just happen to be wild, and *free.* Because of the lack of snow in most Arkansas winters, we can harvest them fresh all winter. This means that although we could dehydrate them or freeze them for later use, there really is no need to for us.

Wild Chives can be a great topping for Potatoes, Fish or Salads, and taste great in soups and stews. This is another one that the @little-peppers are very good at identifying on their own, but they still double-check with @papa-pepper prior to nibbling on them, which is good.

It seems that the little fruit doesn't fall far from the tree.  I love how your kids are immersed and embracing their surroundings. I truly believe it will take them far in self-sustaining themselves when they are older. Great job pinky pepper!

Nice work in knowing two great plants, @little-peppers! Do you ever dig up the chives and use the little bulbs growing underground? Here's one way I have used the little chive bulbs, with their green stems - and dandelions, too. Do your chives last all through the summer? Where I live, in Oregon, the chives are out from the fall, through the winter, and through spring. But they lose their leaves and disappear during our summer. So that's why I freeze and dry them - so I can have them all year long. And so I can use them to cook dinner when I go backpacking.
