New laws in Thailand are directed against smokers in their own home
Smokers in Thailand may be prosecuted under new laws that come into force on 20 August 2019 when they smoke and smoke a cigarette at home. The new laws against smokers published on May 22 at the Royal Gazette , aim to reduce the impact of secondhand smoke on family members, especially children in their homes.

People who smoke at home may be charged with domestic violence in the near future if they are accused of smoking.

Complaints about smokers can be submitted to the Family and Protection Centers across Thailand, which are represented in all provinces of Thailand. The cases are then submitted to juvenile and family courts where they are further tracked and processed.

For example, when a family member develops a condition such as asthma, a smoker living in the same house is charged with domestic violence.

The new laws have already been confirmed to Thairath by Lertpanya Buranabantit, the director-general of the Department of Women and Family Affairs.

Commentaries on a news story published by Spring News on YouTube say it would be better to ban smoking in Thailand altogether than to try to enforce the new law.

This is the latest government action to control cigarette smoking in Thailand. The Thai Ministry of Health has introduced new regulations that affect all smokers. The new rules are intended to ensure that smokers are kept away from all public areas and public buildings.

In February, smokers were no longer allowed to smoke outside public buildings such as condos, offices, hotels, bars, restaurants and shopping malls.

Smokers are not allowed to puff within 5 yards of the entrances to public buildings. This could mean a fine of up to 5,000 baht.

Also in February, it was announced that smoking is banned at six airports in Thailand.

Since Sunday, February 3, the Thai airport operator Airports of Thailand (AoT) has decided to close the smoking rooms in all six major airports in the country. The smoking rooms were closed or simply removed. The airports Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Mae Fah Luang are only allowed to smoke in special smoking areas outside the terminal buildings.

Since February 2018 smoking is prohibited on the beaches of Thailand. Smokers can only visit certain smoking areas and are not allowed to smoke on the beach themselves.

In Thailand, around 10 million people are smokers, according to the Thai media.

According to health authorities, the life expectancy of smokers in Thailand is cut by 18 years, and 72,000 people die each year as a result of smoking.

The financial cost of treating people who smoke-related illnesses is around 220 billion baht per year, according to Mahidol University Medical School.

The tax revenue from cigarettes, however, amount only to 68.6 billion baht.
