He was the **Father of The Navy** and the leading voice in the war for independence, but deep down, he was a peace-loving hippie. He loved peace so much he referred to his diplomatic notes from Europe as his **Peace Journal** and he named his farm **Peace Field.**
What did he grow in his **Peace Field**? **#Hemp**, of course. He said:

Hemp is a Plant of great Importance in the Arts.

**He Knew** that if you wanted **Good Hemp**, you had to physically assault and ridicule it. He added:

When it has been well beaten, it must be heckled, or passed thro a toothed Instrument…to seperate the shorter Tow, from that which is fit to be spun.

- He was a **Hemphead**, a huge proponent of hemp and wrote about its uses and intricate cultivation process. He wrote :

..and Manufactories, as it furnishes a great Variety of Threads, Cloths, and Cordage.

- What makes **his love of hemp** a bit more intriguing, however, is an excerpt from a column he wrote in **Boston Evening-Posts** (1763) about the advantages of growing hemp as a multipurpose crop. Adams wrote:

Seems to me if grate Men don’t leeve off writing pollyticks, breaking Heads, boxing Ears, ringing Noses and kicking Breeches, we shall by and by want a world of Hemp more for our own consumshon.

- While that almost seems to suggest a recreational appreciation for cannabis, an annotated version of this postscript indicates that he was referring to the use of **Hemp to Create Rope**, that was used to **Hang Men**, not to smoke for pleasure. I found actually zero evidence that **Adams Smoked Marijuana**, but when I find, I will let you know!
