What Qualities Are You Looking For In A Steem Witness And Why?

[**Steem witnesses**](https://www.steem.center/index.php?title=Steem_Witness) play an important role in keeping everything running smoothly on the Steem blockchain. Without them, there wouldn't be a blockchain that benefits the community.

>A Steem Witness is a person who operates a witness server (which produces blocks), and publishes a price feed of STEEM/USD to the network. Witnesses' computers in the Steem network have a job that is to make 'blocks' and add them to the blockchain and also to store the complete blockchain data. These blocks contain information about posts, comments, votes and currency transfers.

I look for witnesses that are trying to give back to the community in some form. That could be in the form of creating tools for users, developing code and suggestions for Steem Inc. It could be in the form of contests and curation like we do at @steemcreative.  There are a few witnesses that don't really do *anything* for the platform at all, those are the ones that I try to stay away from.

I look for those who are actively giving something back to the community in the form of apps, cool stats sites or in curation (including flagging). They should also be active around hardforks to show us what they mean to us and whether they should go ahead.

There are some who just take the witness rewards and maybe sell some votes. They are less likely to get my vote.
