"The Wishmonger", Episode 29, Links to previous episodes

The fountain was exactly as they had left it except for a few leaves that had settled back into the basin, and a large cobweb that had been spun covering almost a third of the basin. Roger set his backpack on the wall surrounding the basin. He removed the box, took the key from the string around his neck, and opened the box. He gently laid the journal to one side and lifted the key out of its place.

While Roger climbed out to turn on the water Joey returned the journal to the box and replaced the  journal and box in Roger’s backpack. They were taking no chances that something might happen to the journal, since they still were not sure what secrets might lie between its covers. Joey watched, expectantly as Roger brushed the cobwebs away from the square hole that they both hoped the key would fit.

“Wish me luck,” Roger joked as he slid the key home, “It fits!” Roger turned it slowly. A low moan escaped the fountain as the pipes filled with water for the first time in over fifty years. The moan turned to a rattle and the basin shook lightly as the ancient pipes struggled to deliver their cargo. Roger climbed out of the basin and waited breathlessly as a rusty trickle turned to a clear sprinkle and then the fountain came to life! 

Water gushed from the coin nozzles and splashed noisily on the tile of the basin. Lifting leaves and pushing them around in circles. Nozzles, at the base of the bronze figure, spurted up creating a
curtain of water that reached to Jeremish’ knees. The entire effect was quite dramatic, and the fountain seemed to be in full working order.

“Woohoo!” Roger danced around Joey as he spun a wheelie three sixty. The boys waited eagerly for the basin of the fountain to fill with water. Roger took the coin from his pocket and nervously polished it on his sleeve breathing on it, to get a high sheen. When the basin seemed to have gotten as deep as it was going to, Roger took the coin in hand, “Ready?” he asked. His hands were shaking and his heart felt like it might pound out of his chest!

Joey smiled and sat up to the front edge of his chair,“Are you?” Joey looked as excited as Roger felt.

Roger closed his eyes tight and focused on his new friend Thomas, formerly known as Crunch. They had decided for the wish to work that they would not discuss the actual wording. Everybody knew if you told anyone else your wish it would never come true. Roger had decided to wish for Crunch to find
his father. Not knowing whether he was alive or dead this seemed like a more reasonable approach than wishing for his return, which might not be possible. 

He let the thought of his new friend’s father fill him from head to toe. Then he flipped the coin with a thump of his thumb. He opened his eyes to watch as it soared up flipping end over end. The golden disk rose up, flipping smoothly, around and around. As it reached the top of it's arc, the coin seemed to pause in mid air for just the briefest moment before dropping into the bubbling water and disappearing in the foam.
