My 2017: Welcoming the New Year: The Chinito way in the Philippines

Chinitos or Chinoy are what Filipinos call other Filipinos with Chinese lineage or features. 

The Chinese had already established trading relations with the local Filipinos as early as the 9th Century and already created communities and intermarried with locals. 

You can see various Chinese influences in food, religion, culture, economics and socio-political factors. 

My grandfather was a Chinese immigrant from the Canton province made a life here in the Philippines who married my grandmother who had Spanish ancestry. 

If you look at us four children of my Pops and Matriarch we are evenly split to look Chinese and Spanish Mestiza

So let us enumerate the many ways that the Chinese has influenced the way Filipinos welcome the New Year. 

**FIREWORKS**

The Chinese invented gunpowder that is used in fireworks. You mix in various metals and chemicals to produce the color and trails of fireworks, some glitter, a whole lot of pretty packaging and light the fuse and boom it rockets to the night sky and blooming like flowers. 

Fireworks, just like the Chinese, are used to create as much noise as possible to scare away the evil spirits. 

You have your skyrockets, pinwheels, flares, fountains and ground spinners. 

Here in the Philippines we have something similiar but the names are wacky.

**Sinturon ni Hudas** (Judas' belt) - ground spinner

**Super Lolo** (Super Grandpa) - Firecracker or Cherry Bomb

**Great Bawang** (Great Garlic) - Cherry bomb

The names are a hoot! 



**FOOD**

1. Another way that Chinoys or Chinese Pinoys welcome the new year is to have 12 round fruits. One fruit to signify bounty for each month of the new year.

2. Eating Biko or sticky rice cakes so that good luck will stick to you the entire year.

3. No party would be complete without Pancit which is stir fried rice or flour noodles with vegetables, meat, seafood and mixed with soy sauce, sugar and liver.

This is eaten as it is believed to bless the person with long life.

4. Lastly no chickens are served because the belief is if you eat chicken you'll eke out a hand to mouth living lifestyle for the rest of the year. 

The Filipino phrase for that is. *"Isang kahig, isang tuka"*

**SOCIO-CULTURAL TRADITIONS**

1. All doors and windows need to be open so that the good fortune will come in. Loosely based on a watered down Feng shui. 

2. All lights are open so that there will be no dark corner evil spirits can hide. 

3. All debts must be paid which is kinda hard because of all the expenses incurred buying gifts and having a lavish Noche Buena feast beforehand on Christmas Eve.

4. You stuff your wallet and pockets with fresh peso bills to gain wealth.

5.  You scatter coins all over the house to gain wealth.

6. You wear polka dots to signify prosperity. 

7. You wear red clothes to attract luck and bring riches.

So there we have it the Chinoy way of welcoming New Year in the Philippines. 

Some small fireworks, speakers check! Horns and pots to bang on check! Ingredients for the food later check! No chicken! check! Just wanted to be sure. All lights working and so many coins and paper bills ready and checked!
