# It is a custom for our Korean family to gather chestnuts during the holiday season.
These chestnuts are gathered by the ancestor's tomb. It turns out to be kind of an alpha male thing with my father in law bragging that he can find more chestnuts than anybody else.

# After we gather the chestnuts we bring them in the house to sort, wash and steam. 
 It is the custom in Korea to do a lot of the kitchen work while sitting on the floor. This year we brought in a huge stash of chestnuts. I think we completely cleared the mountain of chestnuts. My son tried to lay a big hint on his grandpa saying, "Hey grandpa. I don't see any chipmunks in the mountain these days. I wonder why?" Then he finally says it, "Grandpa, I think we ate all the chipmunk's food. We brought in so many chestnuts and acorns that the animals have nothing to eat." 

That finally did it. My son got the lecture of a life time. For twenty minutes he learned what life was like living after the Korean War when all the mountains were barren and a kid was lucky to get one chestnut with his lunch. How a whole family of people ate at the dinner table looking at a dried fish. That was their only side dish. They couldn't eat it, just look at it. If they looked at it twice they would be scolded. Then he told about how he worked his butt off selling clothes in the market and working as butcher only to see his grand kids spoiled and unappreciative. 

# We really decided to be nice to grandpa and grandma this year, but my son blew it. 
He couldn't take the lecture and went into the other room and closed the door behind him. This kept grandpa quiet for a while but it was an ominous quiet. When he came out of his room grandpa's first words were, "kids need hard training." This became my son's catch phrase for the past week. He is on the kitchen floor doing pushups and I ask him, "What your you doing?" He answers, "Kids need hard training." I talked about balance but it is easier said than done. My son still thinks the chestnuts should be returned to the squirrels.

# *Where have all the Chipmunks gone?*

<br>

***A squirrel skimmers across the hill
Chipmunks confused and scurry at will
The forest echoes with calls of children***

***Grandpa and grandma have been here before
Collecting charms from yesteryear
Like a forager or a bear***

***A splendid score
Four bags and an apple core
Bring them in the door***

***But wait can it be...?
The reason we didn't see
Squirrels and chipmunks lurking with glee***

***Is the twenty story development on the other side of the path***

***Maybe grandpa and grandma are not to blame
Maybe the noise of construction
Drove the animals insane***
