The puppy is a really good analogy. Sometimes it doesn't matter how much you do to help the puppy, it still doesn't make it and maybe it was never meant to. That's not an analogy, that's just me trying to send you some moral support. It's hard when you lose a baby and you often question if you should have done more; for me it's rabbit kittens or chicks.
