빌바오는 스페인의 북부에 있는 항구도시로 북대서양과 접하고 있다.
미소국 여행 4일 째 되던 날, 부르고스에 이어 가게 된 도시이기도 하다.
이 도시에는 산티아고 대성당을 비롯하여 누에바 광장, 네르비온 강 서안의 구시가지에 세워진 바로크 양식의 시청사 등이 유명하다 하는데 우리는 빌바오 구겐하임미술관을 보는 것으로 만족해야 했다.

스페인의 빌바오는 철제품이 유명하여 셰익스피어의 작품에 빌바오의 강철로 만들어진 빌보스 검이 등장할 정도로 철광석이 많고 광산, 제철소, 조선소의 공업도시였는데 1980년대 불황을 맞아 급격하게 쇠락하기 시작했다. 

이때, 스페인 정부는 빌바오의 경제 부흥을 위해 구겐하임 미술관 유치를 결정하였고, 프랭크 개리의 설계로 7년 만인 1997년 10월 18일 구겐하임미술관이 개관하게 되었다.
크랭크 게리는 외장에 티타늄 판넬을 사용하여 빛을 받는 각도에 따라서 다른 색을 띠도록 하여 보는 사람에 따라 다양한 모습을 연상하게 하게 하는 효과를 노렸고, 이로써 기하학적인 구겐하임 미술관을 보기 위해 전 세계에서 관광객이 몰려오게 되면서 빌바오는 경제 부흥에 성공하였다.

여기에서 ‘빌바오 효과(Bilbao Effect)’라는 말이 유래하게 되었으며, 그 의미는 한 도시의 랜드마크인 건축물이 그 지역 전체에 미치는 영향이나 현상을 일컫는 용어가 되었다.

+ 빌바오 구겐하임 미술관의 심벌인 강아지 퍼피. 꽃으로 장식된 12.4m의 퍼피는 미술관 개관시에 한시적작품이었으나 방문객들의 인기가 높은 데다가 시민들이 철거를 반대하여 계속 전시되고 있다고 한다.

후안 카를로스 에스파냐 전前국왕은 ‘20세기 인류가 만든 최고의 건축물’이라고 극찬을 했다고 하는데 빌바오 구겐하임 미술관에는 미국 철강계 거물인 솔로몬 구겐하임이 직접 수집한 현대 미술작품들이 보관되어 있으며 살아있는 작가 중 가장 비싼 가격의 경매 기록을 세운 제프 쿤스의 풍선꽃, 마젠타 등이 전시되어 있으며 요절한 천재화가 장 미쉘 바스키야의 그래피티도 전시되어 있다.

실내 2층에서는 1층의'시간의 문제'라는 거대한 철판으로 제작된 작품을 볼 수 있었는데 촬영을 못하도록 했으며, 작품은 실내 뿐만 아니라 실외에도 전시되어 있었다.

9 개의 LED기둥에 바스크어, 스페인어, 영어로 된 문장들이 흐르는데, 그 내용은 에이즈 연구를 후원하는 내용이라고 한다.

철제로 이루어진 이 작품은 워낙 커서 이 작품이 전시된 1층에서는 작품 전체의 감상이 불가능하여 2층에 올라가서 봐야 비로소 볼 수 있다. 1층에서는 작품을 따라 걸으며 이 작품을 보는 위치에 따라 다른 모습으로 해석할 수 있어 전체적인 감상을 위해서는 오랜 시간이 필요하여 '시간의 문제'라는 제목이 붙여지지 않았나 싶다.

튤립은 제프 쿤스라는 사람의 작품인데 2012년 11월 뉴욕 크리스티 옥션에서  3368만 달러에 낙찰되면서 당시 생존 작가 작품 중 최고가를 기록했다고 합니다.
미술관이라 그런지 엘리베이터도 다르더군요~^^

프랭크 게리 ㅎ 모던 건축의 거장이죠(맞나?!) ㅎㅎㅎ 대학생 때 제가 열심히 수업을 들었다면 맞을 겁니다. 구겐하임 미술관이 진짜 멋지다고 해요 ㅎㅎㅎ
