More ways to earn crypto

**Full disclosure:**
1. I’m not a finance professional. I am simply sharing a few ideas to earn crypto that I have stumbled upon down the rabbit hole. Please note that anyone investing in or tinkering with cryptocurrencies should be aware that it is a high-risk asset class.
2. I have included some referral links in this post. All [hyperlinks](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperlink) that have an asterisk (*) symbol are referral links. Please note that if you follow through and complete the required task(s) for these referral links I will also receive a kick-back.

I made a deliberate decision **not** to title this post ‘More ways to earn FREE crypto’ as all of these require you to *do* something to earn the crypto. There’s no such thing as a free lunch! *Earn* and *free* together to me seem like an oxymoron.

Popular ways to earn crypto include:
* [Coinbase’s Earn](http://www.coinbase.comn) program - watch some tutorials to earn crypto (including BAT, ZCash, [EOS*](https://coinbase.com/earn/eos/invite/j360wb54), [Stellar*](https://coinbase.com/earn/xlm/invite/gxvjn643) and DAI).
* Brave rewards - use the [Brave browser](http://www.brave.com/download) and watch ads to earn BAT token, and spend the BAT token inside Brave by tipping registered content creators with said BAT. I’ve only just started doing this as it only recently rolled out in Australia. I think when the full roll-out happens for Brave browser on mobile, this will be killer. I don’t spend much time browsing on a desktop nowadays.
* Steem. Posting this on steem (how meta!). Enough said.

In this post I will highlight (what I think are) lesser known ways to earn crypto. Before I dive into it, I also wanted to add that although the amounts of crypto you earn in dollar terms (read FIAT currency) through these examples might seem small today, it’s worth noting that these values could be worth exponentially more in years to come. They could also be a big waste of time. However, considering the small amount of effort required, I think they fit the bill for what [James Clear](http://twitter.com/jamesclear) and [Naval Ravikant](http://twitter.com/naval) refer to as [asymmetric opportunities](https://twitter.com/jamesclear/status/1054835948595433474?s=21).

I also acknowledge there are lots more opportunities to earn crypto through sh*tcoin airdrops, bounty programs and various ‘faucets’ (for all of the above see [r/beercoins](http://reddit.com/r/beercoins)), but the earning opportunities I highlight in this post are projects that I think are good quality with credible teams (but don’t take my word for it, DYOR).

Finally, these earning opportunities each require you to either register or authenticate your identity using a centralised social network. If you’re into crypto for privacy reasons, these may not be for you.

## Republic

[source](https://republic.co/blog/introducing-note)

[Republic](http://www.republic.co) is part of a family of smaller companies under the umbrella of angelist, which is a platform for folks to invest in startups. Crypto and non-crypto start-ups are vetted by Republic and list for retail investors to get a piece of the action. Republic has a native token called [Notes*](https://republic.co/note/i/fwxpdx?utm_campaign=referral_token_share-earn&utm_content=08-19-2019-08-17-18&utm_medium=direct&utm_source=republic.co). Notes can be earned on the Republic platform simply by registering, and there are also other ways to earn Notes by using Republic. One can also ‘spend’ Notes tokens on Republic when investing in startups. In return, investors get equity at a (slightly) discounted price than non-Notes token hodlers. I believe they will be announcing more use-cases for the Notes token in future.

Although the Notes token in and of itself isn't that exciting, recently Republic announced they would be listing more airdrops in future for crypto startups. The first airdrop on Republic is [Althea network](http://www.althea.net). If you’re interested in mesh networks, you may have already heard of this project. I find the idea of mesh networks and a decentralised internet super-interesting so I was excited when I heard about this airdrop! After earning Notes tokens, you can find the Althea airdrop on the Republic website and take the five-part quiz to earn 20 Althea tokens. The quiz allows you to re-try if you submit an incorrect answer without penalty and you can take it in multiple sessions - it doesn’t have to be completed in one go. Also, the videos for the quiz are very long. I did parts one and two in a single sitting. However, I gave up watching the videos and searched for the answers in their whitepaper (shh, don’t tell!). However, for part three the questions are too specific to the video content to find the answers in the whitepaper so I plan to come back at a later date and watch the videos in full to complete this.

## Origin protocol

[source](https://medium.com/originprotocol/follow-and-share-on-social-media-to-earn-origin-tokens-e36a349e5cf1)

Origin is a protocol for decentralised peer-to-peer (p2p) marketplaces. The idea is that anyone can create a p2p marketplace using Origin - could be a general purpose marketplace (eBay-like), accommodation (airBnb-like), ride-hailing (Uber-like), etc. Competing services can co-exist all underpinned by Origin and users can decide which one they want to use, which incents developers to continue to improve their products. User (sellers/buyers, drivers/passengers, hosts/guests, etc) profiles port from one marketplace to the other so reputation is key. As this is a decentralised protocol, a lot of the rent-seeking middlemen are taken out of the equation, which represents better value for both parties in the transaction. I think this will be an important piece of the puzzle for crypto adoption in the years to come.

They have launched their own [dApp*](https://shoporigin.com/#/welcome/c7fdd8f3e4b), which is a showcase for their protocol (sort of like how steemit was the original showcase for the steem blockchain) and through this dApp, one can earn their token by completing some simple tasks. As the token isn’t listed yet on major exchanges, this is one to hodl.

## HumanityDAO

This is definitely the most experimental of the three. In a nutshell, this project offers a passive income of 1 DAI (their 'UBI') a month.

When I was thinking about how to describe HumanityDAO, I was thinking about what problem it solves ... and I came to the conclusion that they’re not really solving any problem. However, when I went back and read the [rationale](https://medium.com/marbleorg/introducing-humanity-90ddf9ead235) behind it, it did begin to convince me that they are solving a (currently first-world, but when crypto adoption goes mainstream, broader ...) problem. Three problems to be more precise: HumanityDAO exists as an "experiment in unique identity, governance, and Universal Basic Income".

First, their solution for identity is for anyone with an Ethereum wallet and a Twitter account to be able to apply as a member of their DAO (decentralised autonomous organisation). It's very simple - you tweet your Ethereum address and a link to your application ([example](https://twitter.com/rhysmonkey/status/1129565906189688832?s=20)) - there is a step-by-step wizard under 'Apply' on the [HumanityDAO](http://humanitydao.org) website. Other approved DAO members then vote for or against your application and, if successful, you become an approved Human and start earning ‘UBI’. The idea is that one can’t apply multiple times with multiple Ethereum addresses because the applicant must associate each address with a unique Twitter account and, unless you’re a master at maintaining multiple identities on Twitter, it’s likely your applications will fail. Second, this pool of approved humans, enables associated projects to use the DAO for voting, reputation management and entitlement schemes - speaking of which ... all approved humans are entitled to 1 DAI a month (while the initial pool lasts!). The most fun part is navigating to the UBI page and seeing the figure update in real time.

**To apply**, you will need - a web3 wallet like metamask (and know how to use it). **TIP:** I think joining the Discord channel and introducing yourself in there and/or asking questions will increase the chance of your application getting approved. I did that and they were very friendly. I noticed other applications getting rejected whose Twitter activity seemed similar to mine so engaging with others in Discord seemed to pay off. **On the UBI ...** besides the initial use-case for DAI (medium of exchange), there currently exists some exciting opportunities to earn money on DAI - [compound](http://compound.finance), [Dharma](http://dharma.io) and [pooltogether](http://pooltogether.us) to name a few. If you add the DAI from Coinbase earn to the HumanityDAO UBI funds, one can earn some a little beer and coffee money on the side.

As the team state multiple times in their explainer articles, HumanityDAO is in its experimental phase. Because crypto is still the domain for geeks and libertarians, this will not change the world but I think it’s worth checking out if only for the experience and the 1 DAI payout a month (while it lasts).
