The existence of the star of Bethlehem is based on the biblical texts, where it is mentioned in the Gospel of St. Matthew as follows:
"And having heard the king, they went away; and behold, the star that they had seen in the east went before them, until it came and stopped over the place where the Child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And entering the house, they saw the Child with his mother Mary, and, bowing down, they worshiped him; and opening their treasures, they presented gifts of gold, incense and myrrh.
