THE SEARCH FOR OTHER EARTHS

The sun belongs to a galaxy made up of million of stars. Some of these stars are much brighter than the sun, and some are much dimmer. Even so, there are probably there are millions of stars just like our own sun. The formation of the planets thought to have appeared soon after the sun's formation. This may mean that other stars in the galaxy have also formed planets.

There are countless millions of other galaxies in the universe. So, many scientist believe that intelligent life must exist else where. Some scientist hope to find other inhabited planets by picking up radio signals sent out by any alien civilizations that may exist. A project called SETI, the SEARCH FOR EXTRATERRESTRIAL INTELLIGENCE has been tr ying to identify signals from space that sounds artificial. So far it has been unsuccessful.

Other scientist have sent out radio messages from earth. They hope that if there are alien civilizations, they will pick these up and reply. Some space probes have plaques on their sides showing the position of earth and its people. Others have electonically encode pictures, greetings, and music. It is hoped that as they drift out of solar system into others, alien spacecraft may intercept them because they want to find out about llife on our planet.
