Throwback Thursday: Venture Capital vs ICOs

I often like to look back at previous posts to see how things have evolved. The beauty of Blockchain is that its immutability allows us to do so without having concerns of it being changed. I think it allows us great perspective and also gives us accountability of our thoughts as they evolve over time.

It has been amazing to see the rise and fall of ICOs as regulatory uncertainty has really limited the amount of projects issuing new coins without changing their approaches. Even those that have been largely successful like TON (Telegram's) have had challenges working through all the ramifications their issuance have had as the default thought continues to be that most of them have been and are securities (from a US perspective).

However, I believe that this has led to another opportunity which is having more Venture Capital coming into the technology which has benefits in terms of sustainable development around potential ecosystems around the technology. While it puts the decentralized aspect "on the back seat" which also excludes many potential users to participate, it does create a better business approach that could help it remain relevant as adoption continues to grow.

**Continued Growth of Venture Capital in Blockchain & Cryptocurrencies**

Technology has historically been funded Venture Capital investors. These investors traditional have gathered funding from limited and general partners to then deploy capital into upcoming startups. Although there are multiple phases of VC investing, the fact is that before blooming into tech companies, most startups seek the capital and sometime guidance of these investors.

Blockchain has been interesting in the sense that given its decentralized nature, most of the capital raised has been through crowd sourcing or out of consensus in working through the technology. So while VC has invested almost $2 billion in the space since 2012, ICOs alone have raised almost $6 billion in 2017.
More incredible is the fact that despite the rising regulatory concerns in the ICO space, these have raised almost $3 billion in the first 2 months of the year. However, a major shift could be coming in the near future as regulators clamp down on the issuance of additional assets and even socia media and internet companies are now prohibiting the ability for these projects to advertise themselves on these platforms which have created there own niche following in the crypto space.

As these challenges penetrate the projects, they may find themselves in difficult situations where regulatory uncertainty may require them to spend unexpected money and time on clarifying their status versus achieving progress on their technology, Most believe this has led to the decrease in values recently. In recent weeks, there as been a shift where projects are now seeking VC capital for equity while pushing potential coin issuance for a future phase regulation is clarified.

Thus, VC has been an increasing player in the space since December, raising more tha $400 million which is 20% of the total raised since 2012. We can expect these figures to increase as more diversified players enter the space. Whereas wealthy investors were traditionally the principal source of capital for these funds, we have also seen an increase of Corporate funds come into the overall VC industry. In blockchain specifically, it is believed that half or $1 billion has come from Corporate funds.

The main investors have been from the financial and telecom industries as they have needed to β€œbuy-in” to the technology in order to catch up. This demonstrates the need to embrace the innovation of this technology. This should come into play as industries demonstrate that the benefits outweight the risks of not regulating these assets. Ultimately, the incursion of Corporate and Institutional investors into the space will accelerate the innovation in the space which will lead to increase adoption. Unfortunately, it could also mean that these assets become more centralized and out of the hands of the massses which may be contrary to the original thesis of most projects in the space.

What are your thoughts on the amounts of capital coming into the space? Do you see a shift of the better assets being grab by VC instead of the public? What does that mean for existing assets?
Please let me know your thoughts in the comments below! I always enjoy engaging with the community to get a diversified perspective on matters.

Thanks!

The way I see it, the guys with the mega bucks to throw around would always get the best piece of the pie.
That's just the way it is. The majority of the public lack the financial muscle to get in on the action.
Cheers
