So now you want to start a business, you have the capital and the next question is the location of your business. You probably want to start the business in your local community, because of the familiar faces and environment but you have to think long term. Will your business thrive there after 5 years in that location? Taxes? Bills? Can you keep up? Sometimes a change of environment is what you need. It can be quiet difficult to recover if you start your business in a wrong location, think of the cost of moving? The loss of customers etc.
A wrong location can have a disastrous ripple effect on startups. In choosing the right location, here are a few things to consider:
### Business Style:
What is the style of your operation? What is your business really about? If it's a retail store, what products do you intend to sell? Is it a company? Figure out your style and know what you need, a store, a warehouse or an office space.. This is the first step.
### Demographics:
This is the part where you consider your customers, will the location offer proximity to them, you want to be as accessible as possible. What about the community, will the population be interested in your business, if yes how much of the population?
Does the community have the type of clients you need for your business. It's Economic situation in the community healthy for your business.
Now to your employees, is the community suitable for them, do they have good schools for their kids and basic amenities etc..
### Traffic:
Now you will have to visit the location at various days of the week and different hours to monitor the traffic. Does it have adequate foot traffic? You don't want to be cornered up in a spot that is hidden from customers on foot. This is important for retail stores but for office location, you don't need the traffic.
### Easily Accessible:
Now you have to consider the route to the location.. Is it accessible by customers with cars? Is there a parking space for customers and employees? If you are getting huge supplies, can a truck pass through? Is it accessible to the disabled customers?
If you are in a office building, will you have your private key when the building is locked on weekends and you need to work on weekends? Will the electricity and other utilities work on weekends when you are around?etc..
### Competition:
Is the location close to your competitors? It can be two sided.. First, you might be able to get an already established customers if your products are way better than theirs or you might not get customers at all and that can frustrate your marketing, so in this note you need to consider a new place..
### Nearness to other business and Services:
If your location is near other businesses, it can help boost your customer base. For example your retail store is close to a restaurant, the customers can always come in to see what you have. It is also good for your employees, they have a place to eat. You need to check the type of businesses close by and be sure that it will Benefit yours.
### Reputation of the Location:
Gather as much information as you need about the place, like the type of businesses that was there before, if they failed, why they moved etc.. You don't want to fall into a trap.
### Zoning Restrictions:
Find out if there are zoning restrictions in that place.
### The Infrastructure:
Check out the electricity of the place.. Check if they are working, check the telecommunications etc. Make sure the place is convenient for your business.
### Billings:
Consider the rent, is it affordable? Can you keep up with it during hard times? Inquire about the state taxes on business and other utility bills. Find out all the costs related to that location and let it be part of your decision
