>4:1-2 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
The meaning of Adam knowing his wife simply means they had an intercourse which resulted into the pregnancy and birth of Cain and Abel who were both men. We got here that Abel was into rearing of sheep ehile Cain his brother was a tiller, we can also call him a farmer for better understanding.
Now a time came when thwy both were to offer sacrifices to God in their own ways, lets see what happened...
>4:3-5 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering. But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
We were made to understand here that Abel brought offerings that God appreciated better than that of Cain and this made Cain unhappy. Well we don't know what kinf of offering Cain brought but we were made to understand back in children class in church that Cain brought rotten items from his farm. Well even if that was not what happened, something close to that happened for God not to be pleased with it.
>4:6-7 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
God confirmed it here that he didn't do well with the offerings he brought but Abel, his brother did far better. Ofcourse Cain knew what he did and didn't have any right to question God on why He didn't accept his offering. We will look into what happened in our next lesson.
