We find it difficult to think of Mary in a different position than at the feet of Jesus. Previously we had seen her at his feet listening to his word (Lk 10:39), now we see her again at his feet, surely seeking consolation. And then we will see it again at the feet of Jesus anointing them with a perfume of great price in an act of adoration (Jn 12: 3). Those who on quiet days listen and submit to the Word of God, will also receive consolation in the days of anguish, and after the trial they will adore him.

Now, before the Lord could comfort her, it was necessary for her to express everything in her heart, something she did with confidence: "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." Undoubtedly, during the illness of Lazarus, her two sisters had repeated this same feeling over and over again, so it is not surprising that Mary now says the same thing that Marta had previously expressed when she met the Lord. Both had placed all their hopes in the coming of Jesus, both had hoped that his presence would save the life of his brother, and most likely, both had felt bitterly disappointed when he did not come. So they had the need to express their pain frankly before the Lord.

This was a deeply moving moment for the Lord. He loved these three brothers, but he had not been able to do what they expected from him because he had other superior plans for them. And he had not had occasion to explain what he intended to do in favor of Lazaro, so they continued to suffer for what they considered the definitive loss of his brother. The Lord understood perfectly his pain and shared it with them in the deepest part of his being. The evangelist tells us that "when he saw her crying, and the Jews who accompanied her, also crying, he trembled in spirit and was moved".
As for the expression "was moved", the experts in Greek tell us that it implies a feeling of indignation, disgust and anger. So, along with the pain that the Lord felt for the loss of his friend Lazaro, feelings of rejection also mixed up with what was before him. But what exactly was it that so outraged Jesus?

Some have assumed that the Lord was outraged because Lazaro's sisters were grieving bitterly over his loss. Others believe that he could not stand the hypocrisy and disbelief of the people who had gone to comfort them. But none of these things seem to make much sense. There is no reason to criticize Marta and María for the pain they felt after the death of their brother. The Lord Himself cried beside them and felt the same pain. And we have no reason to question the honesty of the intentions of those friends who had gone to comfort them.

Therefore, it is most likely that the Lord felt a holy indignation to see the ravages that sin has caused in the world. It would be something similar to what the liberator of a country oppressed by the tyranny of a rebel would feel upon seeing the chaos and destruction that it has caused. Let's not forget that sickness, death and all the other misfortunes that we see around us are the aftermath of sin.

In any case, the expression also indicates that the Lord had feelings and passions as a human being that he was, although always controlled by the Spirit. In his emotions there was no kind of disorder, as often happens with us. He was perfectly human, capable of experiencing all our feelings and emotions, but never sinning.
