As the developed world largely recovers, the developing world may not have even peaked (yet).

This stage of the pandemic is a weird one for me. We are getting to the end stages in the United States through vaccination, but globally the pandemic is far from over. We may very well see the worst stages of the pandemic globally in terms of infections and deaths in the months ahead.

This pandemic is shifting into a developing country pandemic. Most high income countries are seeing infections come dramatically down as they vaccinate. However, much of the developing world remains unvaccinated and will remain so for awhile. Unfortunately as more transmissible and severe variants keep spreading, these countries may see a wave of mass infections before vaccines become available.

And the troubling dynamic of it all is that these waves of mass infections will give ample opportunity for the virus to accumulate more variants. This is a global crisis that will need global cooperation. We need a serious commitment from countries like the US and the UK to improve coronavirus vaccine access.

Graphs from Brookings showing the pandemic shift into a crisis for the developing world over time. When you look at excess deaths rather than official coronavirus death totals, the pandemic has been especially severe for those countries.
