The Courier is a movie about the men who helped to stop a possible - devastating nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis period. Since the modern cinema lacks these kinds of spy-thriller movies based on true events, I’d say that this is a good contribution to fill in the need. I’m not talking about those spy movies like James Bond or Mission Impossible but like Munich and Bridge of Spies.

Some scenes in The Courier are truly brilliant. Especially one of the earliest scenes where it shows the protagonist and his wife in two different rooms, doing two different chores. That particular frame shows us how their lives are so different from each other. Then the final moment in the prison, the shower scene. It felt like a fallen angel going through his redemption. A man who dedicated his life for the greater good is an angle indeed, but without wings. Benedict’s performance in the last minutes was really good but we can’t forget the supporting act from Merab Ninidze. In addition to all these matters, another satisfying thing is the neatly done score. The composer should be appreciated because of the way he used all those music. Sometimes intense, sometimes comedic, heroic, and saddening.

“You did it, Alex. You did it”

The only appreciation received by the Merab’s character. The whole movie only highlights the US protagonist’s heroism but not the USSR informant’s sacrifice. Of course, this is a USA-made movie so that should be expected but it is not a really good thing. The character Alex (Oleg) should have received more praising and recognition because he is a hero in this tale too. So the script could’ve been much better than this. Dominic’s directing is ok but also could’ve been improved. The first and the second acts are a bit slow-paced and a little bit boring. Being slow-paced is not actually a problem if it is really intriguing. But in here the intensity in the first 90mins are truly underwhelming. Miraculously, they managed to get rid of all these problems in the final scenes. 

Overall, it can be called as a great true story turned into a good movie.
