Face Frame for DIY Vanity

This is a beautiful piece of salvaged mahogany that I'm using to build a custom stone top vanity for my daughter's bathroom. The whole project started way back in July when I tore out a bright orange counter top and everything else in a really ugly bathroom. The new bathroom has a heated tile floor and a chic curbless shower.

In the last post I jointed one face and one edge of each board. The next task was planing the boards to thickness. My shop has a jointer/planer combo machine - it is like a Transformer. More than meets the eye.

The planer function uses the same cutter head as the jointer; it just passes the wood under, rather than over, the cutter.

I ripped the boards to width on the radial arm saw. It works best if you run the board over the jointer after each pass through the rip saw. It is surprising how much the wood warps when you cut into it.

The radial arm saw is a Transformer, too. Here it is cross cutting to length.

With this Kreg jig you don't have to machine any complicated mortice and tenon joints. You can just clamp the board in the jig and drill the pocket. A couple screws pull the joint together and hold it while the glue dries.

My first pocket hole joint was just a practice piece. Easy as pie.

![](https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/partiko.io/img/78cf2bc0b29238ff9eb92eba2b250ebe1a7c79a6.png)

The soapstone counter top makes a perfect work surface for gluing up the face frame.

A single clamp keeps the front and back surfaces lined up while the screws are installed.

All done with glue up and assembly in less than 30 minutes.

Next up is the doors. They are going to need some more sophisticated jointery. It is nothing too crazy, but it will require getting out the dado set. So excited!

It looks like you have a well equipped wood shop. :-)
I do like the radial arm saw. It takes up more space than a chop saw, but it also does a lot more. You can't rip with any chop saw that I've ever seen.

The best part is that this saw came for free from a friend. The table was all worn out and the motor was locked up.

There was a safety recall on the saw which was still active, so I got a new table and guards from that.

The motor was clogged with sawdust. It started right up when I cleaned it out.

I think of the radial arm saw as intermediate utility compared to a chop saw and a table saw. It does a lot of the same work, including running a dado set, but it is fussy to set up and struggles with big plywood panels.
