God of gods?

Thanks to @ABN I've been prompted to read a bit further into the Psalms today. This passage caught my interest.

It's a beautiful message of solace for me. There's no shortage of encouragement and hope felt when I read this. It does, however, call to mind an interesting topic by using the unusual term "God of gods."

Psalm 84:4-7:
4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they shall praise you for eternity!

5 Blessed is the son of man whose helper you are, and in whose heart are your ways!

6 They passed by the valley of weeping and they have made it a dwelling place, also blessings will cover The Lawgiver.

7 They will go from power to power and the God of gods will be seen in Zion!

In the latest ABN article, some of the connections between cultures were explained regarding Athena. While worship of her or any god is obviously idolatry, I do not believe that every other "god" was nonexistent. Rather, misunderstood and somewhat overrated.

For perspective, ask yourself if any of the angels ever visited these other cultures. How would these mere (but powerful) servants of The Most High God have been perceived by those other people?

In other scripture, such as II Kings 17:16, we see the heavenly host described similarly to stars, while either term is often used to describe angels as well. In this case, we may have a scriptural confirmation of idolatrous angel worship.
"They rejected all the commandments of Hashem their God; they made molten idols for themselves—two calves—and they made a sacred post [Ashera] and they bowed down to all the host of heaven, and they worshiped Baal."

I can understand why God might be somewhat perturbed at that.

Then, here in Psalm 84, we see our Father in Heaven described as the God of gods. Is it really such a stretch to connect these dots? Mankind certainly invented their own nonsensical deities in many (usually handmade) cases, but close examination (far beyond what I can fit here in a timely fashion) reveals that many ancient deities were probably very real entities with authority of some kind, which was probably delegated tasks from God.

To be absolutely clear, I don't view them as being remotely comparable to God, whatever the actual meaning of the term "gods" might be with a lower "g." Personally, I view it as a statement of relative power. Relative to an ant, I'm a god, but I know myself to be full of flaws and worldly weakness. In the same light, those beings would be as gods to us, while less than ants to God. As the Quran would tell you, God truly is One and has no equal.

Even the Nephilim, whose legends today describe them as demigods were the children of what mankind viewed as gods. Angels with a delegated responsibility on Earth.

So where did they go? I could guess at several reasons, actually. One is because people were constantly getting the wrong idea about them, and some went so far as encouraging humans to worship them. God probably got tired of it for the last time and updated the rules of engagement.

The term 'gods' is simply a label we have given something higher, more powerful, and greatly misunderstood. We shouldn't put too much weight on the word itself, or worship these beings just because of their superior capabilities. A healthy level of respect, I believe, is wise... But there is something or someone higher who deserves the utmost worship and adoration.

I've thought that those who had higher powers than men that were called "gods" in many other cultures may or may not have been what was described. Man tends to like to personify and feel as close as possible to an entity that could potentially help them in their times of need. How is it that the Almighty Supreme Being turned into an elderly man with a white beard? - Man personified that which he doesn't know something that can be relatable and can give an insight to what it might be like...

Then again, some of these entities may have appeared in a human-like form. Whether for a good or bad purpose, whether for the one they served or selfishly for their own endeavors. History is never that black and white, unfortunately. We can only try to learn from the past and not form idols or worship those which we cannot understand and are or seem higher than us. I agree with the comment of having a level of respect, but not worship since the supreme Almighty Father deserves all of it.
