Cannabis Grow Garden 2: 3 weeks In Flower And I Have Upgraded The Light And Fan

<p>It's been about 4 weeks since I provided you with a gardening update on my second garden.</p>
<p>Today was the end of week three in flower stage.</p>
<p>Originally I had 14 plants, growing in soil. Six (of the fourteen) turned out to be male and I ended up with one plant that was a hermaphrodite. This means that it was presenting with both male and female parts.</p>
<p>Oddly enough, it wasn't the straggler plant that I was waiting on to see if it would grow hair or not. It was a plant that I had identified originally as being female but as I kept inspecting the plants I could see that it had pollen sacs too.</p>
<h2>Like The Rest Before It That Were Male, I Culled The Hermaphrodite</h2>
<p>I have read that it is possible to turn a hermaphrodite back into a female only plant. Right now, I just don't have the space or the time to try my novice hand at that type of experiment. &nbsp;To protect the rest of the remaining females, I felt my best option was still to eliminate the risk of pollination. (Pollination could have occurred if I let the hermaphrodite live just like if I let a male plant live. Pollen is pollen no matter which way the plant can swing.)</p>
<p>Here's what my 7 remaining plants look like now:</p>

<p>With this garden, I have been able to keep the canopy lower and grow more of a denser hedge. You can see that I have one much taller queen in the left-hand corner. In this grouping, there are 6 different strains of cannabis growing.</p>
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<img src="https://i.imgur.com/pMHRJ9U.jpg" width="640" height="853"/></p>
<p>You'll notice that the one in the back corner is also more spindly than her sisters and I wasn't able to achieve as dense a bush with her. This is a strain from Jamaica but not one that I have grown before. It was suppose to be a shorter plant but it doesn't look like it's going to be short at all.&nbsp;</p>
<p>This cannabis garden is a much different grow than my first.</p>
<p>The plants are really thriving and I attribute that to feeding them with a different nutrient line, improving my own skills, using a digital ph meter for the water and getting the height of my light adjusted properly.</p>
<p>Once I started to notice a real difference with how this garden was growing, I thought that it would be prudent to the outcome of my crop's yield if I invested in a better quality light.</p>
<h2><strong>There's a lot of hype about LED lights</strong></h2>
<p>I'm still reading a lot of mixed reviews about LED lights so I decided to go with a new ceramic metal halide light and reconfigure the carbon filtre and exhaust fan.</p>
<p>The housing for the light bulb is made from German textured aluminum. According to the company, this is supposed to provide light uniformity and diffusion. The name of the light is a Silverstar CMH-R 315/930 reflector.</p>
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<img src="https://i.imgur.com/3ZtpyLh.jpg" width="640" height="480"/></p>
<p>This is what the reflector housing looks like underneath:</p>

<p>The bulb (which is brighter and whiter in appearance than my high pressure sodium halide light, plugs right into the centre of the reflector and hangs vertically instead of horizontally.</p>

<p>This bulb is meant to be used during the flowering stage of a cannabis garden.</p>
<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<img src="https://i.imgur.com/uVbWYQj.jpg" width="640" height="448"/></p>
<p>The photo (above) is the &nbsp;electronic ballast for the light. It controls the power going to the light bulb. This 315W fixtures replaces a 600W High Pressure Sodium fixture so I'm hoping that this light will provide some economies of scale as the garden completes its flower growing stage. Allegedly, this light runs cooler while still providing a good light spectrum very similar to the sun.</p>

<p>The new light is now installed.</p>

<p>You can see the carbon filtre, the fan and the exhaust behind the bulb's reflector. The filtre, and exhaust fan are removing any aroma of cannabis to the outside. As the plants mature they become more pungent and intense, in terms of the aroma that they give off.</p>

I love your cannabis growing skills. You are providing so much information to see and to read. You are blazing the trail for those that will follow along behind you in the future.
I would love to grow cannabis. But, for now. It isn't possible.

It can be use for medical treatment. But someone used it for smoking. Its dangerous habit and bad feelings.  Cannabis can grow indoors using bright lights, it can grow in greenhouses and of course it can grow outside. Cannabis can grow in soil or artificial grow mediums and hydroponic systems. Cannabis plant is most awesome looking. Leaves very beautiful to me. Probably Growing cannabis is also great fun, satisfying and rewarding. Thank you again and resteemed your post.

cool to watch this. Makes me want to move to Canada where the weed laws makes a bit sense. And respect because growing weed is easier said then done.

However that's a challenge growing various strains dealing with various heights.  Maybe you can put the smaller plants on a object so they are closer to the lamp?   

The further from the light the less power the light has.  In the Dutch they say the _more light the more weight._ I know this is a problem because the light bulps get super hot. But the plants  will reward you for that :)

Sorry for being critical but the hermafrodites are most likely are a sign of stress. I think there is something to improve.  Or maybe this is not even your "mistake" and it has to do with the genetics of the seeds. 

Hopefully you dont take my feedback the wrong way. I always like this kind of posts.

Thank you so much for your comments @markush! I really appreciate it. The plant that went hermaphrodite did grow under some stressful conditions. It was given as a clone but it was already showing signs that it had just started into flower and I put it back to vegetative. It did get stressed and I just accepted it as a gardening loss.

# Good Job and
excellent choice with the CMH. ;) I would shoot for a 4'x4' area with that light and reflector, for maximum flower quality. Add half a gram (per gallon) of epsom salt to the next watering of each plant showing the deeper yellowing of new growth. Cannabis loves magnesium and the sulfur boosts terpene production. :)

You can also use Low Stress Training (LST) on the taller plant and it won't slow it's growth at all. Use paper clips and fiber free string, like fishing line, to pull the branches closer to the buckets. Go slow by only moving the branch until you can feel resistance. Go back the next day and you'll be able to move it a few more. ;)

There's an "Optimal Light Zone" below the lamp where the flowers will grow perfectly. Below this level you'll see the flowers growing a stem away from the branch, in an attempt to get closer to the light.

I work to optimize the distance of the light from the canopy. I then clip off every flower which is growing a stem to reach the light. (Yes, that can be quite a bit) The end results are a harvest consisting of only high quality flowers, no larfy or underdeveloped lower flowers. ;)

Thank you so much @thecleangame! I'm going to try magnesium right away. I have to get brave with what I cut. I have read that if you sacrifice taller stems even though they have flowers on them, it will allow the other lower flowers to grow better.

Use LST to pull the taller stems over. No need to cut them, especially during flower. Trimming the lower larf will put all the potential energy from them in to the top flowers.

You  spoke my mind . I was thinking of this to. But with my limited English it was hard to explain. But pulling your branches with clips and fiber free strings etc is a great way. I tried this once in my outdoor garden just for fun. And I made a plant growing horizontal:) I was amazed how much they can handle.

They look super healthy! I'm absolutely in love with ceramic metal halides, I just wrote a post about them a couple days ago in fact!  We saw increased resin production with them, and of course less heat. They're the best.
