[Project Farm on YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2rzsm1Qi6N1X-wuOg_p0Ng) does some interesting tests on different things.  Not all the tests are useful, but he tries to do a good job, and this one is - I feel - useful.

He uses two lawnmowers to run the test.  One contains SAE-30 with Slick 50, and the other is just the oil.  He checks how hot they run (Slick 50 makes the engine cooler), and then he tests that old Slick 50 advertising claim that a drained engine will run for hours on Slick 50.  Slick 50 helps the engine run cooler but, as far as the OLD claims that it'll run dry for hours well, that was demonstrated to be a marketing lie because it locked up due to overheating almost 3 times faster than the pure oil-lubricated engine.  If you've got a dry engine, then you should not run it until you get more oil in it or it's going to throw a rod and seize up, which can do significant damage to the engine, and even go through the hood. Plus, engine damage can have a knock-on effect on other parts of the system, causing damage where you wouldn't expect it.

Tests over the years have shown that most additives do not perform as well as you think, if at all, but this is not universal.  Sometimes using an additive can save you money and give you the same results as using a high-priced gas, as he showed in another video of his.
