Long Trail is a craft brewery hailing from Bridgewater Corners, Vermont. This is a mountainous state in New England, and it most definitely does not have the same beer culture as an urban center like in Boston. It is actually much more local than a brand like Sam Adams. Down in Jersey, there were three of their brews readily available in nearby supermarkets. So, I decided to give them a try. After all, my access to small time American craft breweries will go away in a few days when I return to China.

Amber Ale

This was a bit of a disappointment. Amber ales sometimes seem somewhere between a golden beer and a dark one. This is a light-bodied, malty brew. Typically, amber and brown beers can sometimes be the happy medium between those who want lagers and pilsners and those who want something rich and more complex. However, this tastes so watery that it feels like you are drinking soda that tastes a beer. The carbonation is more evident when drank from a bottle, and it disperses and thins out once you pour it into a glass. It has a relatively low IBU number and a deent 5% alcohol level. The price point for this was somewhere around $10, give or take a few nickles and pennies. For that money, I can easily find a six pack of bottles that's a little more satisfying.

Double Bag Double Altbier

GThis is definitely stronger than then the Long Trail Ale Amber Ale. It's international bitterness unit number ranks in at 39 and it comes with a 7.2 alcohol percentage. Even with with higher alcohol level, this feels a little light in its body, and perhaps this is a good thing. This feels like a strong beer masquerading as something lighter than what it is. So, this is a buyer beware deal: this seems chuggable, but you really don't want to slam a lot of these at once. It will likely make you soupy eyed with a bit of slurred speech and penchant to look for romance where you decidedly shouldn't.

Green Blaze IPA

Since this an India pale ale, it is much more bitter and sharp than the above two beers. You can't accuse this IPA of tasting like a soda. It's IBU bitterness number is 60, and its alcohol level is 6.5%. There is a bit of a citrus taste that comes about midway through a sip or a gulp, and like a lot of other IPA beers, there is a slight burn that lingers at the back of the throat once it goes down.

Out of these three Long Trail beers, this one seems the best. It does not seems as watery or "beer soda-ish." That said, it still seems a bit watery when compared to other IPA beers of all brands.
