History is sometimes preserved only through long and arduous means, such as keeping records, documenting history and most times, myths or tales via word of mouth.

Most often than not, some interesting people and their achievements are easily remembered, because of how often they appear in text-books, classes and studies, or the stories that are peddled about them.. 

There are other cases where several achievers in our history have often times been forgotten as well as their achievements. From the purported father of democracy, Cleisthenes to the “Bad-ass” female sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko; some of these people through their works and lives, helped set the tone for some of our modern day systems, structures and developmental reforms. 

Some of the historical persons who did amazing things but have not been remembered as much as they should include;

The Greek philosopher and lawgiver from Athens, known as [Cleisthenes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleisthenes) is thought to hold the honour of being the father of democracy, as early as the sixth century, through his reforms and policies in his native state. <sup>[ref](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleisthenes)</sup>

However, most people still regard Thomas Jefferson as the father of democracy.

[Percy Julian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percy_Lavon_Julian) was the first African American chemist inducted into the National Academy of Sciences. 

He lived under the Jim Crow laws at the time, and worked as a doctor while pioneering the drug industry. 

He later developed hormones such as progesterone and testosterone through chemical synthesis. His research helped lay the foundation for the development of today’s steroid. <sup>[ref](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percy_Lavon_Julian)</sup>

The ‘bad-ass’ [Lyudmila Pavlichenko](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyudmila_Pavlichenko) was a sniper during the World Was II for the Soviet Red Army. 

She is credited with 309 sniper kills and is regarded as the most successful female sniper of all time, and one of the top military snipers in history. <sup>[ref](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyudmila_Pavlichenko)</sup>

Record breaker, [Nellie Bly](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nellie_Bly) is known for her trip around the world in just 72 days – a record breaking feat. 

As a journalist, she is known for her undercover research in a mental institution, and for her work in investigative journalism. <sup>[ref](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nellie_Bly)</sup>

One of the first female paleontologists was [Mary Anning](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Anning). Her specialization in the Jurassic Era was of great scientific value. 

One of her most significant discovery was the skeleton of the ichthyosaur; which was correctly identified as the first one. <sup>[ref](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Anning)</sup>

What makes this lady and her story unique is that she survived three different sinking ships. 

[Violet Jessop](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violet_Jessop) functioned as a steward onboard the White Start Line in the early 1900s. She was in the Titanic when it sank, but she survived. 

Two other Titanic sister ships also sank as well, yet Violet Jessop survived all. <sup>[ref](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violet_Jessop)</sup>

The United States of America recently missed out on getting a first female president. 

But what most people do not know is that they may have already had one prior to this time. 

Her husband Woodrow Wilson suffered a terrible stroke; and after that [Edith Wilson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edith_Wilson) stepped up to become the acting President of the United States, while her husband, Woodrow Wilson, recuperated. <sup>[ref](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edith_Wilson)</sup>

[Ching Shih](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ching_Shih) is regarded as the most successful pirate-lord ever. 

She was a Chinese prostitute, and became highly successful after taking charge of her husband’s fleet. <sup>[ref](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ching_Shih)</sup>

Credited as the first actress to go nude on screen, she became a huge inspiration for other models and actresses. 

[Audrey Munson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audrey_Munson) was the inspiration for about 12 statues occupying New York City. <sup>[ref](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audrey_Munson)</sup>

[Annie Edson Taylor](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Edson_Taylor) who was a teacher in 1901, went on to become the first woman to survive a trip down the Niagara Falls in just a barrel. 

After getting her out, fished from the water, she said “caution anyone against attempting the feat." <sup>[ref](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Edson_Taylor)</sup>
